I've personally had this problem a number of times. It's always been due to a badly burned Cd or DVD. I now habitually burn at a lower speed than is rated for the disk. You could also try cleaning the disk burner lens. If that all fails try a different brand of disk. -- Take care. Kevan Farmer 34 Hill Street Cheslyn Hay Staffordshire WS6 7HR
I have downloaded and burned CDs 3 times. As it is a FTP
installation, CD only loads up the some kernel modules and load up RAM
drive directly from FTP server ( I use mirror.ac.uk and tried other
mirrors as well). I tried both in my office and at home. I am pretty
sure it's not network issue. The error says Media Error, but the
actual media source of the installation is FTP server.
Anyone has an experience with direct FTP installation? Please give me a tip!

The only time I've gotten media errors from good CD's is when I have my SuSE CD is my slave CD ROM Drive. In my personal computers I like to have more then one CD ROM for several reasons... but for some reason SuSE doesn't like to be installed from a slaved drive. As soon as I put the CD in the master CDROM, everything went great. No more media errors. Perhaps this is the problem you're experiencing? I don't know too much about FTP installs, as I try to always buy my copies of SuSE... but I thought I might mention it just in case. Warm regards, Jordan Michaels Vivio Technologies Kai Zhang wrote:

The CDROM is on master. I can boot up via CDROM and it leads to
installation procedures. Everything works fine until Yast2 gets to the
software package selection. It took awful long time for my PC to
evaluate the package. Then "Cannot read package data from installation
media. Media Error?
I logged into the mirror.ac.uk server on all occasions and downloaded 60 MB
of information to load into memory, setup the keyboard and mouse, usb-storage,
etc. It only locked up on the software packaging.
Please give me a hand!

Yep, that sounds familiar. Just out of curiosity, are you trying to install the 64 bit version? Or the 32 bit version? What kind of PC are you trying to install it on? -JM Kai Zhang wrote:

Thanks, I have my suse 9.2 successfully installed! Many thanks!
It seems files on UK ftp mirrors are not legible for direct ftp installation.
Any idea when suse 9.3 will be availabe for download? Rumors are that
from 9.2, there will be no more free download. can anyone verify this?

The ftp version is not available yet. check http://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/9.3 , read the message at the bottom of the screen.
