too much bad behaviour on the list
I am a bit distressed about the recent exchanges of insults and general bad temper of some of the contributors on the list. The list has been most helpful to a lot of people and has remained mostly immune to spates of bad behaviour, but lately certain people seem to indulge too much in having a fight and exchanging insults. I will not single out threads, nor presume to be in some kind of moral high ground when condemning such behaviour, but maybe some definite action from the list moderator is in order. Freedom of speech has nothing to do with people insulting each other on a public/archived list. Josef

SLE isn't moderated and I really don't want to start having to unsubscribe people for being rude. Just killfile them so that you are sure to never answer any of their questions. -- -ckm

Please don't push the users on this list who are employees of SuSE. This has been a list I have been on since SuSE 5.0 and has been most helpful. Of course, every time a new version comes out, there is the usual lemming jumping over the cliff posts and cries for help, BUT there are good folks here who go out of the way to help. A few times a year a really bad apple surfaces and tends to sour some users on the list who get caught in the fire. If you endure the these posts and deal with your own way, the long term benifit is worthwhile. /down boy/./now Dee
I am in total agreement. I was the victim of one such exchange and have on my better judgment decided to ignore the individual who wishes to continue to exchange insults. This is not a forum for anyones ego, but a place of help and advice for linux lovers. I have tried to be helpful and have indeed helped at least one person in need of help. Unfourtunately, I have also paid the price for that kindness by being attacked for my effort. It is truely sad. On Friday 07 June 2002 05:07 pm, Josef Demergis wrote:

i think some of those who use @suse.com also have set bad example with their grumpy responses. Linux gurus need to undertstand that the RTFM approach no longer works,,, its better to ignore those postings that deserve such a response than to come with such responses....

FULL ACK! If you can understand German, read the German list to understand what I mean. Look at the disgustingly unfriendly responses of certain persons which have the time to comment every little side-topic but have quote "too less time to recite manuals all the time". Kindest regards! Agreed about the RTFM aspect. The LDP needs a serious overhaul IMHO. To blurt out that someone needs to read a manual is like telling someone with a cold to dig into the a Medical school text book to find out why they don't feel well. This is especially true for the Linux newb that has been exposed to Linux/Unix style of computing for the first time. A former windows user, even one with DOS command line experience will be fairly lost in the beginning. Most Man pages consist of a simple <command> --<list of args> style format. One can always experiment with this but without understanding these in context will do little for the user and could possibly cause major problems in their system. Also, some to the response can be so Troll like that it's embarrassing. This list has a reputation for being one of the most comprehensive and user friendly resourses for new and old users alike. Yes, we do expect that these personalities will show up from time to time and they usually leave after a period of time due to unreceptive reponses from the faithful on the list. However, these attacks can do damage to novice users looking for a walkthrough. It is not unreasonable to need a walkthrough because much of the techniques used in a Linux box are not intuitive and until a user gets a little experience and develops a feel for how things are done they will become confused and frustrated. The elite "I'm a linux guru and your a peon" attitdue have no place on this list. Just my $0.02 worth, and MHO. Curtis On Sunday 09 June 2002 05:50, Landy Roman wrote:

I have no time for those who consider themselves elite, here or anywhere else. This is a forum for discussing SuSE linux, and not to criticize, but maybe we should get back to asking for help in what we do not know and suggesting solutions in what we do know. I know I have lots of questions!!! Everybody have a good day. On Sunday 09 June 2002 01:04 pm, Curtis Rey wrote:
