One of my clinets has changed the password of root user, and just forgot then ! There is anyway to change it ? Thanks Fábio Rabelo

I think you can boot from a rescue CD, then mount the partitions /bin or /sbin (wherever passwd is) and /etc as /mnt/BLAH . Then chroot /mnt , and run the passwd command (you may have to look around for it, as your $PATH variable won't be the same). I think that will fix it. OR you can boot from rescue CD, mount the /etc partition as /mnt/BLAH , then edit the file /etc/shadow or /etc/shadow- and go to the line for root, then look for a long string of random characters with colons (:) in front and behind it, and delete that string. Then reboot, and the root password should be blank. Then you can login as root and run passwd. I haven't tried the first method... but I have tried this one, and it worked. Doug

Another option is to boot with linux init=/bin/bash And then remount read/write: $ mount -o remount,rw / Now you have access to the system and can edit the respective password file items. This should be in the FAQ, I doubt it's not already actually. -- Mads Martin Jørgensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort?" -- A. One thing that you can try is at boot hit the esc key and where the word linux is type init 1 and press enter. This will put you into a maintenance mode and will allow you to change roots password by using the passwd utility. Like so passwd (password that you want to assign) On Sat, 2002-05-25 at 09:06, Fábio Rabelo wrote:
