Need advice on choosing a color printer 4 SuSE Linux.
Hi, I am new to this list, but I have been a SuSE linux user since V 7.1. I wish to purchase a printer that is highly compatible with linux in general, and SuSE linux in particular without the necessity of an overly obscure or arcane workaround. Color printing is an absolute must as currently I have a Lexmark Z51 which has only mono support. I would like any recommendations that experienced users may have. I have visted www.linuxprinting.org and found some little, but usefull information there. I am considering a Canon S800, or an Epson ?C80? printer of the type that use separate cymk cartridges (which seem preferable over the expensive lexmark solution). Also I am considering, as a last resort, a Lexmark Z53 or Z55 and am aware of the lexmark linux drivers available for these. Please share your knowledge and experiences in this matter with me.... especially in regard to the above mentioned models or any other model or make that you might recommend for quality color printing. Thanks Max Webb

Max: I don't know about the S800, but I have a BJC-6000. I'm very happy with it, and don't intend to replace it any time soon. Just before this Canon, I made the terrible mistake of buying an HP-722, which I sold to someone as soon as I could; I won't be buying another HP printer if I can help it. -- Regards, gr, in /usually/ sunny, balmy Florida's Suncoast. My BJC6000 died recently and I replaced it with an Epson C80. The C80 is faster and has better color. On 16 May 2002 at 22:30, gilson redrick wrote:

I have a problem with SuSE8 Pro. It has stopped booting. It gets as far as: switching to run level 5 starting personal-firewall (initial) And there it stops with the cursor flashing. I can't get anywhere using the CD1 as a rescue disk, and the computer was shut down correctly the last time i USED IT. I have tried using Safe Mode, but it is just the same. I have run the Personal Firewall ever since I first installed SuSE8 and have not touched any settings since. Any ideas on how to make it continue booting, please? I don't really want to have to reinstall it. Many thanks Keith

Following the advice of Jaska I booted with Linux 1, which did not try to run the personal firewall. I ran YaST2 in text mode and uninstalled the firewall. Also I reconfigured the modem not to use it. All is now OK, except for my not using a firewall. I am wondering if the file got corrupted, so I will reinstall it later and see if it works. Keith
I think Epsons are supposed to do better color, but I'm running an HP Deskjet 970cxi and it is pretty good. It definitely works under Linux. (I mainly run a Laserjet, model 2200, for ordinary files.) At 08:19 05/17/2002 -0400, Jerry Feldman wrote:

Hello All -

I've been very happy with my Lexmark Z52 under SuSE. With distro's up to 7.2, I used the Lexmark provided drivers, which worked well. Even better, when I installed 8.0, it was detected and configured during the installation, absolutely seamlessly, no problems, no headaches, no nothing. It just works.
The best approach is to check the Linux Printing site before making a decision. http://www.linuxprinting.org/. As with modems, some printers today are winprinters. IMHO (and not because I am since May 7th an HP employee) HP is the Cadilac of printers, but I have usually had good luck with Canon ink jet printers. My Canon BJC6000 died at some point recently and I needed a good printer ASAP available locally. After checking prices and compatibility, I bought the Epson C80. (It was available with a $30.00 rebate as well as a $50.00 gift certificate from Circuit City, which brought the effective price down to under $100US). My wife is the primary user of the printer, and loves the Epson. (WRT: BJC 6000 death. I had been using Canon ink since I bought the printer. More recently I had obtained cheaper ink, and had been using that. I don't know if there was some kind of cause and effect). On 22 May 2002 at 21:13, Doug McGarrett wrote:

Without an autopsy (!), I can't declare if there is cause and effect, but something similar happened to my Epson a way back. After a while of using a cheap refill, somehow that ink corroded the circuitry, and I had to buy a not-so-cheap print head unit. Thanks no thanks to cheap ink! What I've done since is to consider the cartridge price and estimated coverage in the printer's total cost. -- Regards, gr, in /usually/ sunny, balmy Florida's Suncoast. Catastrophe: n. Well, here what I did about expensive color ink catriges for Canon BJC620. I gave the sample of the each S/M/Y ink to my mom chemical engineer. She analysed each sample on gas chromatograph and deducted chemical formula for the each sample. Now I'm brewing these color inks at home without paying any money. Alex ------------------- the

Well c'mon then. Tell us the formula! It's cheaper to but a new printer than replace the black and colour cartridges in my Lexmark here in Spain. Steve.

Me? You should ask Alex me thinks, I'v decided some time ago that paying a onetime bundle for a really good Postscript Laserjet printer is way better for my nerves when I need to have a decent output for an official letter e.g. The times I needed to run off to an office-supply store to get a new cartridge, because the one that I purchased just weeks before started mis-behaving already, were definitely *not* worth the cheapness of the Canon BJC-4200 I once used. Unless you _need_ the color stuff you really should have a good hard look at a soho Laserjet printer, where the last of 4000..6000 pages you get out of a toner-cartridge looks just as good as the first. The formula for the ink probably won't help a lot anyway, as the ingredients are most likely *not* COTS drugstore products, you'll need to rob a chemical plant. A year or two ago, I tried to refill Epson cartridges with cheap replacement ink. I could never print with that printer again. It cost me $200, and is now junk. Buy HP, and buy their overpriced cartriges, and buy a b&w printer for all your normal needs. Color dot-matrix is just too expensive, except for color output, which most people hardly ever need. There are laser printers for around $200 now. --doug, wa2say At 19:25 05/26/2002 +0200, steve wrote:

An injet print is a kind of dot matrix, I think, even tho it has no ribbon. And it is too expensive to use as your day-to-day printer. I have one, and I use it about two or three times a month! At 04:26 05/27/2002 -0600, Forrest Halford wrote:

I don't think so,.... Dot matrix is a mechanical method of printing, tottaly unlike the inkjet...... I had a color ribbon for the Citizen GSX-130. Color was ok but not real sharp. Expensive ribbon so I only used it when needed. Ok for the kids 4th grade geography report or cartoons. Had five colors, as I recall, on the ribbon, one of which was black, then did shades by mixing dots from these colors on the ribbon. I still have the ribbon in a plastic case in a box since I was so stingy about using it. Just history from an old...well, whatever. Richard On Monday May 27, 2002 12:03 pm, you wrote:

OK, I concede; I was actually referring to an inkjet printer as being too expensive supplies-wise to use all the time. Just give me ten lashes with a print ribbon! --doug At 12:18 05/27/2002 -0700, Richard wrote:

I had a color dot matrix printer many years ago. It was a 24 pin dot matrix printer that used a 4 color nylon ribbon, plus a standard black ribbon. It used a funky lever mechanism to lift and lower the color ribbon so that the appropriate color was in front of the pin head. It's major problem was that it attempted to mix colors, and you could end up with just a hole in the paper if you used cheap tractor feed paper. The pin head would go back and forth over the spot a couple of times and hammer a nice soggy hole through the page. It was expensive to use. I don't remember how much each color ribbon was, but I do remember using it as little as possible because of the cost. Oh yah, it wasn't Russian ;-) I had it when I used to live in Canada. C.
Will you share these formulas and procedures? At 5/26/2002 09:27 AM, Theo v. Werkhoven wrote:
