[opensuse] HOWTO Configure window open location and size
When I power on my machine, I normally open a shell console, konqi, Mozilla Mail and KWrite. No problem so far. The annoyance/'problem' comes in when I have to move the windows of each and decide if I would like it to fill only part or the full screen ie location and size of each app window. Each time I start the machine up and login I have to start each app and then decide on its size and location. How/where can I get the respective windows to remember their locations and size. I would assume on each app window but have driven myself arounnd several bends trying to figure out which does what so some help would be appreciated. Right click on the banner bar at the top and select "Configure Window Behavior". Under KDE, right click on a window title bar, chose Advanced and then special window settings (or special application settings), whatever seems appropriate. -- Don -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

There's also a section just for these settings in the KDE Control Center (the last settings panel in the "Desktop" group / section). This is one of my most favorite features, especially in late-model KDEs where you can indulge just about every conceivable control-freak impulse you might have. For example, you can exclude certain windows from the task bar or the pager (I apply both of these to my GKrellM window and to the taskbar clock's calendar pop-up window, e.g.). You can control position, virtual desktop assignment, size, maximization in either dimension and on and on. The hard part can be to get the proper criteria for distinguishing the window(s) to which a particular setting applies. Some applications (especially non-KDE applications and most especially Java applications) don't distinguish their windows sufficiently and you cannot apply your preferences to just the windows you like. You can use the internal window descriptors (which are the one's that tend not to be sufficiently refined in non-KDE applications) or base the setting on the window title or title prefix, but sometimes even that's not enough. But all in all, it's a fabulous capability. I've got dozens of them on my system. ("A place for everything, and everything in its place"...)

Thanks for this thread. I was not aware of these options of KDE. Now I tried to use these advanced settings but only partially could do what I wanted. I want to create a new desktop folder called eg. 'Application starter' and copy into it all the startup files I use frequently. Actually I've done this already. Now what are the correct settings if I want _only_ this 'Application starter' window being opened at a certain position in a certain size on the desktop. And I want the side panel being turned off and showing the window in icon view. And I don't want any other konqueror window (eg file manager) to be affected, ie I want them to keep their current settings. I tried different settings but could not find a solution yet. Please give me a detailed description where and what to set. Thanks in adcance, IG _____________________________________________________ Nézzen körül a Karácsonyi Ajándékcentrumban! Try this: - Open a Konqueror window for the folder in question. - Open the window's Window-Specific Settings dialog - Select the "Window Extra" tab - Change the pop-up below the "Window title:" field from "Unimportant" to one of the other settings (Exact match should do) - The now-enabled "Window Title" field shows the window title that will be the (additional) criterion for applying the criterial specified in the Geometry, Preferences and / or Workarounds tabs.
And I want the side panel being turned off and showing the window in icon view.
I'm pretty sure that's beyond the scope of what can be controlled using the KDE Window-Specific settings.
And I don't want any other konqueror window (eg file manager) to be affected, ie I want them to keep their current settings. I tried different settings but could not find a solution yet. Please give me a detailed description where and what to set.
See above.

I have confirmed the setting works as when I closed the Window and reopened the app the windows position was where I had put it. :) -- ======================================================================== Using SuSE 9.2 Professional with KDE and Mozilla Mail 1.7.13 Linux user # 229959 at http://counter.li.org ======================================================================== -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

From your description I think the issue is not how to configure location and size, but how to have all windows open neatly where you want them every time you login. I typically spend some time laying out my ideal desktop when I update the system, then I go to Personal Settings / KDE Components / Session Manager and set "On Login" "Restore manually saved session" (Apply). This causes a new item "Save Session" to appear in the KDE Menu. After saving the session all applications and windows reopen at login where I want them (even in the correct desktops), regardless of what their default behaviour is.
