Planning to make a office layout I wonder where I could find a simple program for SuSE. I still have a nice DOS program, Office Layout from Autodesk, never ran Windows and would like to do this now under Linux. I am running 9.1. If I do a google on layout, office layout etc. I get only info about setting up an office organization, electronic setup etc.. What I am looking for is a simple program with which I can draw the layout of the office with windows, walls etc..

DOSEMU should run any legacy MS-DOS program. It will not run a Windows program. For Windows, you need either WINE, Crossover Office (a commercialized WINE), Win4Lin (MS Windows 9x running under Linux), or VMWare running a version of Windows.
I would add that Publisher seems to be a particularly hard nut to crack. You might have better luck w/ the Publisher alike programs if you don't want to run win4lin or vmware. Crossover office doesn't support it (and according to them, won't, unless someone wants to throw buckets of money their way to get the work done). As far as I know nobody has gotten m$publisher past startup. I have gotten programs to run well w/ WINE that won't start w/ Crossover office (GoBE Productive being an excellent example) but don't remember if I tried Publisher. WINE can be excellent if you put a little effort into it. Win4lin, msPublisher worked with some tinkering with win4lin 4.0 (I think it needed 24 bit screen depth to work completely). It runs well under win4lin 5.0 and think it no longer needs the 24 bit screen. Haven't tried vmware but suspect that it would provide excellent results. As for Office layout you might look at DIA or possibly Kig, depends on your needs. HTH -- dh Don't shop at ZipZoomFly.com!

Crossover Office version 2.0.1 and MS Publisher 2002 are running just fine here. I mostly use it to view and print documents I receive in this format. I think I'll start sending stuff back in Scribus format and see if they get the hint. Louis

I was ready to admit my mistake so I tried in a shell (all on one line) "/opt/cxoffice/bin/wine" --check --cx-app "C:////Program Files////Microsoft Office////Office////MSPUB.EXE" Sure enough Publisher started just fine but as soon as I click a wizard or exit the wizards to a blank project the program stops reacting to further user input. Maybe it has to do with the changes to publisher 2002 Crossover Office 2.1.0, SuSE 9.0, kernel 2.4.166 patched for win4lin (Previously the same result with SuSE 8.1) My version of publisher is from Office 2000 small business. That clippy helper thing is not installed. If I remember right I tried installing Pub. 3 or 4 times, usually very full custom installs and they all failed, finally I tried a pretty minimal install of publisher and it completed without error but the program doesn't do anything. BTW I do not mean to slam Codeweavers, they provide an excellent product that performs as advertised. I'm not particularly fond of Publisher but my wife and daughter like it alot. Yes the wizards and templates, otherwise they would probably be just as happy w/ linux programs. If someone can verify that they have the same version of Publisher working on SuSE 9.0 w/ crossover office 2.10 then I would like to hear about it as well as any tips. Thanks

Great plan, probably should send your documents in .sxw or GoBE's .pve format as well :-) See ya -- dh Don't shop at ZipZoomFly.com!

Jerry - PMJI but where can one find DOSEMU and how does one install it? (I run SuSE Pro 9.0 with XD2 and I would like to install WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS). TIA Kelly Morris

DOSEMU is definitely on the SuSE 9.0 and 9.1 CDs. I also have installed Word Perfect for DOS as a test for a friend. I did not find it on SuSE 9.2

It *is* on the 9.2 professional. I'm running it here.

Why don't you just install WP8.0 for Linux and run semi-native (iianm, the linux version is really wine/windoz ver made for linux). -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/photos

There are some big differences between WP8 and WP5.1 (as well as
what's associated with the fact that WP8 has a "windows" GUI),
many of which don't favour WP8. A lot of people regret the
disappearance of features of WP5.1, and changes in its behaviour,
when it was "windowised" to WP6-7-8, and consider WP5.1 to be a
much better program. I'm certainly one of them!
Best wishes to all,
Ted.
