Vmware on my SuSE 9.0 machine with windows 2000 as guest works all right once I get it started, but it takes something like ten minutes to start. It just sits there, contributing little or nothing to load, with the scrren blank and unresponsive. I have turned off usb, floppy, and sound, but it still loads no faster. Any hints on what I might try next? Thanks, Henry Hajrpending

How much physical ram do you have and how much is allocated to VMware? Ken

I have a gig with 256k allocated to W2K. I looked at vmware.log and see where it seems to be delayed for 2 1/2 minutes, several times, "initializing the USB backend" whatever that means. Try disabling USB in the w2k settings and start it up. If you have no delay then I would report this as a bug to VMware. You may find a report of this problem on there site already. Could be a problem with the MB that you are using also. Ken

... i just cant stand usb stuff. the only thing i use it for is scanner and occassionally, a camera, but that is on the suse side. i use vmware under suse, running a win2k session and have all the 'extras' disabled, such as sound, floppy, cdrom. i enable as required. sound stuff is taken care of on the suse side. try disabling it and see what happens -- << http://michaeljtobler.homelinux.com/ >> Misery no longer loves company. my experience with 9.0 and VM 4 is not good. Installation was not difficult, the suse modules were kept, BUT there was zero stability. Don't know if it was the Reiser fs (first time i tried it) or anything else, but the system would need a hard reboot after only a minute or two of running Vmware. I suspect there is a problem running vm4 in suse 9.0 w. the Athlon Kernel. Back down to 8.2 I went, will wait for the dust to clear... d.

Thanks for the feedback. Maybe I will play w. 9.0 again. Maybe it is the A7s333 mobo from asus. i have not been very happy w.it. Again, thanks and Happy Holidays! dimitris On Wednesday 24 December 2003 04:14, Peter A. Solomon wrote:

I am running Suse 9.0 with vmware 4.05 on an athlon kernel (2.4.21-144.athlon), and it has NEVER crashed. Granted I only got Suse 9.0 about a month ago, but it is rock solid. My guset OS is Windows NT 4.0, and it is running all day because I need it for business apps. I am using bridged networking, and the Windows VM connects to the server adn teh internet no problem. For what it is worth my motherboard is an ECS K7S5a, hardly a high end motherboard. I use the Reiserfs (ext2 for the boot partition). Not sure what the problem is, but Suse 9.0 and vmware 4.05 with an athlon kernel work great for me. Mike -- Michael A. Not my experience at all but I'm not running with parts of VM 4 that come with the 9.0 distro. (I ditched the distributed modules) Using 4.0.5 RPM from VMWare Have run with 3 different kernels (2.4.21 - from 9.0, as well as vanilla 2.4.22 and 2.4.23 (currently) I run VMware all day every day because I need it to VPN into work. If it wasn't reliable on 9.0, I would be doing something else in a hurry. The kernel settings (on the boot line) are pretty important. I an currently running with: apm=off nosmp acpi=off noapic -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S. I use it all day at work using the modules supplied with the kernel with no problems. The only 'special' setting in menu.lst is pci=noacpi. The settings all depend on the M/B you are using. Try experimenting, thats what the rest of us do to find the correct settings.
