[opensuse] RE: AT&T U-Verse
I'm thinking of switching from "cable" to U-Verse. If you can get a TCP/IP connection out, then there should not be an issue. Just for kicks, call them and ask for their Linux support. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

FWIW, I have a cable modem and while ISP doesn't officially support Linux, many of the techs are familiar with it. Compare that to the major ADSL supplier around here, where their "support" people won't even talk to you, if you don't click on the Start button. Also, with my ISP, if the first line can't help, they'll happily escalate to higher level support. With that ADSL provider, they'll hang up on you if you insist on escalating. -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The problem I've always had with that sort of service is that you must have a decoder box for every set; with four or five sets, that's an additional $20-$20/month. One time I actually called Bellsouth ADSL support (before they became
"The New AT&T") I told the tech about the connection issues and when
he asked what OS I was using I said Linux. He actually told me "not
too many people use Linux" and actually got the issue resolved on that
one call. From what best I could tell the agent was in Costa Rica. But
I am pretty sure that was not a usual experiance. But then again, the
line stays up and the PPPoE connection never drops. In the past year I
had to reset the modem and router (DD-WRT... linux-based) one time.

Yes but on just about every cable TV service (and all satellite service) the same is true. Yes you can plug in a TV and get channel 2-30, but that's it. If you want any "premium" channels or HD you **NEED** box anyways. And $5/month is pretty good. Compare to Cox cable service, $5.99 for the box, and then another near $20 in BS fees (DVR "service" fee, "digital gateway" fee... what DVR service, the DVR is in the box I am renting... why do I need to pay a "digital gateway" fee? they said it was so I can get digital channels but I already pay for the digital channels package and a digital DVR)... 60% of my bill was 1 DVR and one non-DVR box, and 40% was the programming charges!!! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
