2.4.7 - k_deflt .vs. k_i386 ??
Hello, I've just upgraded to 7.2 and now want to download and update to the 2.4.7 kernel. I've not got a multi cpu box so assume I don't need the k_smp or k_psmp kits. That leaves the k_deflt or k_i386 rpm kits. They are a different size, so what's the difference between them, and which one do I use? I'm installing onto a 550Mhz Athlon. You want the k_deflt kernel. The difference between k_deflt and k_i386 is that k_deflt is compiled with various optimisations for more modern processors, while k_i386 has none of these optimisations and so it can be run on older 386 processors. Choose the k_deflt rpm because it will support your Athlon and other hardware. The i386 rpm is just that..it will work with lower CPU's..your Athlon can use it..but it won't be as quick. -- Ben Rosenberg mailto:ben@whack.org cat CE|ME|NT|XP > /dev/null

Hi John, Though I have heared other opinions, I don't use the default pentium optimized kernel on my 500 MHz Athlon box, because it didn't like it. You can check on your own, I'd like to know too if you can boot the default pentium optimized kernel; for reasons mentioned above I upgraded to 2.4.7 with the 386 version. So tell me your results! Hi Wolfi, Well, I installed k_deflt and it's fine. And while I've not got any timings to back it up, system bootup is noticably quicker. Not seen any problems so far. Hi John, This sounds well ... next time I install something I'll try the k_deflt as well. Maybe the problems with the Athlon and the k_deflt are now gone; I don't remember on which version of SuSE and kernel I had them, but back then I decided to stick to the 386 if the k_deflt was not working (what else should i do :-) ;) Thanks ...
