I wouldn't call a NetFinity server a "personal" computer. Or any of the other x86 based servers you could install 8.2 on. Platform: Intel x86 (compatible) perhaps?

Ya, I tell people about Linux and they haven't a clue that there's another OS besides mac and windows (except the undergrad/grad students - and it's getting pretty ubiquitious with). I remember when I first got my cable modem from charter@home. They officially wouldn't support Linux. Back in 7.1 days I had to give a static IP so I would call support and skirt the OS question. Near the end of @home I would call support and my question (still skirting the Linux part) would immediately jump me up to tier 3 support (nationwide ctr). I would talk with the more tech inclined about my email and bandwidth taking a dump due to code red. They all said they were trying it at home but still no support. @home died and Charter took over the network in this area. Now, by this time it's 7.3 and dhcp autoinstall worked fairly well. Well I still had to go to tech support, still get jumped up to tier 3 but now all the techs don't hesitate to give me dns and gateway addresses with domains, etc. They all hate windows and run Linux at home pretty much as their main OS (still some w2k holdouts). Now, I always had trouble getting the charter support page at their site - would tell me they don't support the OS (arrghh). But recently I wrote a letter to the customer service dept and told them of my displeasure. The customer service rep runs Linux at home as said he has no proplem accessing the support pages. Well, seems that kong is still kludgey but works kinda. Mozz is the same, but use Netscape and voila - access. Seems they still insist on using browser IDs (haven't tried Opera yet. It's a frontpage thing AFAICT). Seeings how alot of this behavior by the ISPs revolved around the suits notion that anyone runnning Linux is running servers and they have their own enterprise/commercial accounts and access points. but now it seems they're finally realizing that maybe, just maybe, Linux might be being used by people at home. Now, theys still don't have staff for Linux troubleshooting at the tier 1,2 levels. So that's where it's at right now. I think the suits still have a hard time grasping that as comsumer computer markets age the mean percentage of that population is inherently more savvy. Maybe in the next 5 years you'll see tier 1 support for Linux. Now, the issue of talking to hardware OEMs about Linux..... LOL! On the brightside because I'm using Linux so much and sites that grab your info as you pass through them, I have gotten many free subscriptions to eWeek, InformationWeek, and Networld. They think I'm an IT exec or something (not that I try to re-enforce this notion or anything - and regular subscriptions are very expensive... free is nice ;) ). I have yet to run into any phone cold callers or follow ups regarding software.... but I'm ready... hehehehe! Cheers, Curtis.

3 years ago, I called the technical support of my ISP because I wanted to know the IP of its DNS servers, because I wanted to use them in my configuration files. When he asked me what OS I was using, I said Linux. He fell into deep desperation... even if my question was about DNS servers! Praise
