Newly purchased Epson C80 printer and SuSE 7.3 Pro (Newbie).

The only problem (other than the price of - ink) is that there isn't a native C60 or C80 driver and/or filter - doo-higgee - with LPRng, so I've been using the Color Stylus II driver - without any - problems. I would prefer a native driver via CUPS and - gimp-print, but I'm - planning on upgrading to 8.0 shortly (the local Micro - Center was sold out - believe it or not) and after reading this article: - - http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/jsmeix_print-einrichten-80.html This is the first time I have ever tried to install a printer in SuSE on any flavor of Linux and I am mightily confused, so please bear with me. I therefore have a lot of questions. In the "Re: [SLE] Epson printers and SuSE 7.3 Pro." thread, there were a number of things that were mentioned. One of the most important, at least as far as my understanding or lack of understanding of the task at hand is quoted above. There was a lot of praise from the list about Epson's commitment to the Linux community, but I see no Linux drivers listed on any of the Epson sites that I have looked at (?). While it looks like the setup procedure is easier in SuSE 8, as mentioned in the above article, I would expect there to be drivers for the Epson C80 that are available for download and use with SuSE 7.3 Pro, or what? I guess what I can't get my head wrapped around is this with the missing drivers. Are they included in the SuSE distribution or are they in CUPS and LPRng source packages? What about Ghostscript, GIMPPRINT, etc.? There seem to be a lot of variables and possible choices, but not much of this clear for the first time user. An example of this is a reference in a SuSE sdb article about having to reinstall a standard kernel, if your system has a non standard kernel, to get CUPS working. Is this necessary? I went through hell to modify that kernel and three days work. Now I have to throw it out the window? If I were to use the standard SuSE 7.3 Pro packages, which ones do I need? There is cups, cups-client, apcupsd, cups-drivers, cups-libs, qtcups? Do I install these before I use YAST 2 to setup a printer or after? This GIMPPRINT doesn't seem to be listed in YAST 2. There is gv, ggv, g-print, gnome-print. Are there newer packages at ftp.suse.com and how do I go about getting the ones I need with YOU? Believe me, I have read the SuSE 7.3 Pro documentation and have read a couple of threads on other lists about how to solve problems with the Epson C80, as well as general printer setup tutorials and am still clueless. My configuration: 1) SuSE 7.3 Pro 2) Epson Stylus C80 printer, connected by parallel port. 3) KDE 2.2.1 Cheers, Brian
