I have a Suse 9.2 server running Postgresql 7.4.5 and also running Samba. Database is setup and I can accaes the database via Webmin either from localhost:10000 or via webmin from an Windows machine via the IP address:10000. I cannot access the Suse Postgresql database either through ODBC or PgadminIII from the Windows machine (WinXP).I have not been able to get PgadminIII to install on the Suse machine. I keep getting a connection refusted. Is server runnning on host 192.168.121.252 accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5432? Both Suse and Windows machine firewalls are turned off. Windows machine is one one work group, the Suse machine is under another workgroup and the Suse machine is under my desk where I have the windows machine. Neetwork is Win2k and is not a domain, it uses only workgroups. I could connect at one time when both the Windows machine and the Suse machine were on the same workgroup. Any suggestions on what the problem could be? Art

It sounds like you have not enabled remote access on the PSQL database. Look at the file ~postgres/data/pg_hba.conf. There should be a line that enables remote access - something like host all all 192.168.121.0 255.255.255.0 trust In file ~postgres/data/postgresql.conf there should be a line tcpip_socket = true and you may have to modify your firewall settings to allow access to port 5432 on the appropriate ethernet interface. For ODBC access you have to load the ODBC functions into the Postgresql database using /usr/share/psqlodbc/odbc.sql and the psql command. And lastly one has to load the ODBC drivers onto your windows box for postgresql. This comes as a .msi file - once installed onto your windows box one can (for example) specify the PSQL database as a data source in MS Excel which is quite a neat trick. All of the above are described somewhere in the docs - I cannot remember where as it is a long time since I did it. Better this in /etc/sysconfig/postgresql: POSTGRES_OPTIONS="-i" -- ================================================================= Glenn Holmer (Linux registered user #16682) ----------------------------------------------------------------- The one sticking point between us and the open-source community is that we actually think that compatibility matters. ----------------------------------------------------------------- -James Gosling, creator of Java =================================================================
