Hi guys, has anybody got a running vmware? I need this stuff, but it's incredibly s-l-o-w. I am running an AMD--K6 and i read about the problems, but it boots; and they say it should then run okay! The total mem is set to 90M and the virual machine gets 64M. Any ideas ? Any alternatives around ? Get more memory. I have 128MB and it is slow, not s-l-o-w. Win98
requires 190MB virtual memory just to boot. I am tempted to wipe
Win98 and replace it with Win95. I found that 40MB for VMware and the
rest for Linux was faster than a 50/50 split. If I shutdown
everything I can, I can free up almost 40MB. People w/ 256MB physical
memory report that the guest OS runs at almost full speed.

So long as you're looking to swap 95 for 98, I'd recommend that you look here: http://www.98lite.net. I've used this product under VMWare for months (I even registered and donated to get 98Pro/micro), and I am *quite* pleased with the results. If you have to run Windows, you might as well hack at it and have fun ;) -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | Kansas City, MO /\\ 816-241-2641 x107 | http://www.atipa.com _\_V -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Hi Dan, did you install the vmware tools? They speed up the display quite a bit. However, if you did, you probably are already at maximum speed. I have vmware running on a Celeron 333 which is overclocked to 500 MHz. It has 64 MB RAM out of a total of 128 MB. Working with Word is possible but awfully slow, mainly due to the stupid paperclip wizard I believe. I have given up working with Origin since it is really too slow. I guess, upgrading to more RAM and a faster CPU should help. In my own case, running VMWare with SuSE 6.3 on K6-300 with
128 Megs of RAM, I find that VMWare is quite acceptable with NT4
as the guest OS. Stable and not too slow. Win95, on the other
hand, boots but is otherwise too slow to be usable.
The original poster didn't mention what guest OS he was using with
his K-6, but if it was 9x, he'd be much better off dumping it in favor
of NT, at least if he wants to keep using VMWare with his current
processor.

Win9x does work fine on VMWare on Linux with a K6-2/300. I've done this myself on my laptop and Windows 98. You *must* install the vmware-tools, and you *must* configure the kernel correctly. Enhanced Realtime Clock is the main one that must be enabled or Win9x will be very slow. I think there's something else, but I can never remember it, probably because I tend to have it enabled anyway. The other necessary stuff (can't remember right now) is, IIRC given on VMWare's support section. -- Rachel -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
