Can one do a remote login (rsh not telnet) to a linux box without authentication (i.e. no password)? In other words, it recognizes the user and doesn't require a password. TIA, MIke ------------------------------------------------------ Cleary_Mike@emc.com x6033 ----------------------------------------------------------------- Overflow on /dev/null, please empty the bit bucket.
Yes, of course. Create a .rhosts in the users home directory containing the hosts that should be permitted to login, optionally with usernames on those hosts. It works more or less the same as on other unices. Enable shell and/or rlogin in /etc/inetd.conf as well. Don't use it on a box that's on the internet, though. Not without firewalling the rlogin port. There are too many risks associated with rpc for that. regards Anders On Fri, 2001-10-05 at 23:39, Cleary_Mike@emc.com wrote:

All of these events should create entries in the system messages file, you could perhaps write a script to look for them. You might also put something in the .profile/.bashrc to check how someone arrived at being root. This won't help much if the action fails however. Probably the most fruitful course to persue is to look into the session management possibilities available in "pam"... they may do what you want. try "man pam" for some hints... -- Regards Cliff
I know this isn't the same, but it's what I use for my bbs. entry in /etc/inetd.conf -=-=-=- telnet stream tcp nowait bbs /mystic/mystic (the /mystic/mystic is an executable in the directory called /mystic) entry in /etc/passwd -=-=-=- bbs::502:100:bbs:/mystic:/mystic/mystic this logs on someone to the bbs with no password. (the bbs itself has one though) You have to create a user and group called "bbs" with no privledges and no password. Not exactly what you want but it might give you some ideas....
