There's a trick you can use:
Here's my printcap for two printers on a PS110: I tried it but that didn't work. How did you find the port numbers on the printserver? If I am going to have to edit manually, how do I select the correct driver name?
I found the port numbers by RTFM
What you provided is your entire printcap? you must have edited it manually? How did you arrive at that?
Nope just the entries for the two printers hung off the PS110.
is printer 1 and the 4020 port is printer2. works like a charm. Not for me. I just get an error message when I print. Unfortunately I am not at that computer right now so I don't have the message handy.
It seems to me that this is a bug somewhere in the printing system. Why is the print output going to a printer other than the one specified?
I would suspect you have something wrong somewhere else in your print system and it's not really using the ports I mentioned. Are you using LPRng?

after being shamed, I looked for and found the manual for my server.
it manually? How did you arrive at that? Nope just the entries for the two printers hung off the PS110. I guess you have a much better knowledge of the printing system to be able to manually edit the printcap

I would suspect you have something wrong somewhere else in your print You are right, it is operator error. I found the unix section in the server manual. I did find those ports you mentioned but that method wasn't very clear to me. I discovered that the printer names are not the same as the ones defined for Windows. With this info I was able to use YaST to setup both printers and they both work perfectly.
system and it's not really using the ports I mentioned. Are you using LPRng? Yes. I never could make any sense out of the method you provided. I didn't know how to tailor it to fit my printers and I only got an error output from attempting to print but the YaST method worked after I RTFM so I am happy.

Well, yes I do but even if I never edited it, it doesn't take much to cut a few lines out of it. But there's not much magic to a printcap file.

That's great news!! No, the printers won't have 'names' in linux. But you can give them names. -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S.
