Hi all! I just installed Windows 2000 on my home box, now running: Win 98, Win 2000, SuSE 7.0, Debian. I don't know much about Win 2000's boot strategi. It's got it's bootmanager on the MBR now and boots both 98 and 2000. At the moment I boot linux from floppy. Win2 is on NTFS, not FAT32. The question is: can I safely put Lilo back on MBR wit the normal Win98 configuration in lilo.conf? Am I right in my theory that when I choose Windows in the lilo bootup it will run Win2000 bootloader? I did this in a test-installation earlier and it worked but I don't recall all the details. A word on this would be much appreciated. Cheers, ei -- @~~ EagleIce ~ gnu4u@linux.nu ~~@ @~~ Running GNU/Linux & KDE ~~@
I am using GRUB to boot between Linux and Win2K although I am sure LILO can
do it too. No need to boot from a floppy.

Lilo and Grub are different type bootloaders Lilo writes itself to the MBR where as Grub does not. Since you are already using the Win2K bootloader I would stongly suggest that you use either Grub or edit your boot.ini and add SuSe to it. Do Not use Lilo, or if you choose to do so Do Not use fdisk /MBR should you ever decide to remove it or you will also remove your Win2K boot record. Charles (-: Forever never goes beyond tomorrow.

Well, W2 installed it's bootloader without asking any questions so I'm stuck with it at the moment.....:-) About W2 boot.ini could you show me an example of how it might look like with SuSE in it?

That's what I was afraid of therefore I am a bit nervous what to do. I am Linux centered, SuSE is my default OS, but I just don't know how Lilo works with W2.

You can find instructions for adding lilo to the Win2K bootloader here http://www.littlewhitedog.com/reviews_other_00011.asp This was using Mandrake 7.1 but it works the same witn SuSe. SuSe does not include Grub. You can find info and even download it from here http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/ I saw the post from Gary. The prcedures to which he referred will not work if you are using the Win2K bootloader. They work only if you are booting directly to Win2K. To have any hope of restoring the Win2K bootloader you must run the installation cd in Rescue mode, have available a Win2K rsecue floppy you created after installation and you must have installed using NTFS. Thank's for the info. I've downloaded the GRUB thing and I'm considering using it, sounds like a safe choice when running W2 as it doesn't run from the MBR. But I find the documentation very poor of useful info, the tarball doesn't include one word of info on installing for example. The version I downloaded is 0.5.96. Thank's for your reply. I know nothing about GRUB, is it on the CD-ROM? I've always used Lilo and got faith in it, I just don't know how it works with the W2 bootup. Cheers ei On Monday 05 February 2001 14:59, Avi Schwartz wrote:

You can redo the W2K loader, and the directions for this is on Winders 2000 knowledgebase somewhere. I have seen it, but I am sorry, I don't remember. In my case, I don't use it too often, so really don't care if it screws up W2K. Might want to do a search in the Winders knowledgebase, so you have a backup plan.

Thank's for your reply. But how does your input for the W2 look in Lilo? Cheers, ei -- @~~ EagleIce ~ gnu4u@linux.nu ~~@ @~~ Running GNU/Linux & KDE ~~@
Hi EagleIce, On Monday, February 05, 2001, 10:15 AM, you rearranged your electrons about "[SLE] Win 200 & SuSE 7.0": E> But how does your input for the W2 look in Lilo? I defer to Charles on this, and his fine comments. If I remember correctly, he initially told me about how to handle a direct boot with W2K, and a backup plan, as opposed to using the W2K bootloader which is a separate problem. You can't go wrong with his advice on this. <g> -- Best regards, Gary Today's thought: Man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that he sometimes has to eat them.... Adlai Stevenson
