I've jsut installed 8.1 on my new laptop. It's really, really great, and the installation is the easiest I've ever experienced, all OS's included. But two small problems remain. 1. It couldn't find the internal modem. With lspci is it listed as 00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C686 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 40) 2. The sound is working fine, but if I suspend the laptop, it is gone. I can get it back with alsaconf (and possibly by restarting the computer, but I did not try that), but does anybody know why the sound disappears, and knows how to prohibit it from disapprearing or a better way to get it back?

This is not the internal modem, this is the built in soundcard. It says "Multimedia audio controller". -- Mads Martin Jørgensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort?" -- A. P. J.
Hi
This is not the internal modem, this is the built in soundcard. It says "Multimedia audio controller".
My goodness! I managed to copy the wrong line of information. Correct: 00:11.6 Communication controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. AC97 Modem Controller (rev 20)

Can you determine if this is a software modem? Such devices are usually called "winmodems". You can informaiton on winmodems at : http://www.linmodems.org. In order to access the modem, driver files have to be downloaded, unzipped and installed using the usual souce file install : ./configure, make & make install. Read the documentation for full instructions.

Some sound systems have to be stopped before suspending the machine, and then restored on wakeup. The apmd should take care of that. In file "/etc/sysconfig/powermanagement" try to set this to yes: # Default: "no" possible values: "alsa", "oss", "kernel" APMD_STOP_SOUND_BEFORE_SUSPEND="no" -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
