[opensuse] 11" Laptop Recomendation for Linux - Please
Hi, I'm looking to buy 11" laptop for SuSE Linux. Asus EEE PC comes into mind, as well as Acer Aspire and Lenovo models. Anyone have used any of these, or comparable? Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

What are your requirements? Budget? I've got an EEE 1005HA and it's fine with openSUSE or pretty much any Linux distro I throw at it... but it's a netbook so it's got some performance limitations. I specifically picked the 1005HA because I could pop a cover off and upgrade the RAM from the 1Gb it came with to 2Gb... made a massive difference in the performance. Anyway, if you're looking for just the basics, and something small... the EEE is a reasonable choice. C,. Hi I have a 1000HE that rocks along fine as well, runs SLED, openSUSE (11.3 and 11.4) and Smeegol without any issues, it all works.
Yes, I upgraded mine to 2GB and also the 160GB drive to a 250GB one I had here. Next step is an SSD and will only run the latest openSUSE and SLED on it. -- Cheers Malcolm °¿° (Linux Counter #276890) SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 (x86_64) Kernel 2.6.32.27-0.2-default up 8 days 8:28, 3 users, load average: 0.05, 0.09, 0.03 GPU GeForce 8600 GTS Silent - Driver Version: 260.19.36 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I bought an Asus 1005P for my wife. First I installed Meego so she would get an intro to Linux. with Meego everything worked out of the box. Then I tried openSUSE 11.3 livecd everything worked out of the box. I then installed openSUSE 11.3 with the net.iso now the webcam is not working at all (I haven't really tried to fix it also as she does not need it). Some of the dialogs do not fit to the display (ie. acroread print dialog) and every time she wants to print something she calls the pc, OS and finally me some names :). I personally like the asus express gate loads fast and does the job. So keeping it on the hard disk would be my recommendation. Odd. The webcam should work on the EEE 1005 models with no extra config... it's a standard/supported webcam.

This is not really an OS specific issue. You're dealing with a 1024x600 screen resolution on the EEE 1005 models, and very few apps are built that take this low screen resolution into account (even in Windows) - it can be particularly bad in Linux desktops though, with what seems to be a higher number of dialog boxes that "expect" a minimum of 768 pixels (and sometimes more) in height. In these cases, your only real work around (other than opening a bug report on the app) is to press and hold Alt and then mouse-click and drag the window around (try that in any Microsoft product :-) ). The newer EEE models (eg the 1100 and 1200 series) have a 1366x768 screen resolution and the Linux desktop dialog boxes fit a lot better. Hi,
I'm looking to buy 11" laptop for SuSE Linux. depending on your budget, a good recomendation would be to forget a "Netbook" and rather look for a used IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad X32, X41 or X60s from a dealer with 1 year warranty. Depending on the age, model and configuration you get them for 200 to 500 USD.
They are 12", but very good quality and they are faster than most Netbooks, they have a non-glare screen and a keyboard that is even good enough for daily work. For all models exists a docking station (Ultrabase X3, X4 or X6) with optical drive and all needed connectors. And they have a good or even very good Linux compatibility. -- Chau y hasta luego, Thorolf -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
