Re: [opensuse] OpenSUSE 11.3 hangs with Firefox or Google Chrome running.
There are two open source drivers for ATI cards. The first is radeon, which is included with the kernel. The second is radeonhd, which is in the package xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd but I suspect this is for newer chipsets than you have. (It wouldn't hurt to install it anyway.)
I am guessing that the following output of lsmod means that the graphics driver is radeon. samhaber-nb:/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d # lsmod | grep radeon radeon 795094 0 ttm 55320 1 radeon drm_kms_helper 29179 1 radeon drm 177722 3 radeon,ttm,drm_kms_helper i2c_algo_bit 5572 1 radeon i2c_core 26632 5 i2c_i801,radeon,drm_kms_helper,drm,i2c_algo_bit
Does this mean that I should be able to take my old xorg.conf.d file a put the pieces in the appropriate 50-??-?? file in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d directory? This is great information for when I want to refine the selection of possible screen resolutions so that the CTRL_ALT_+ or CTRL_ALT_- selection has only the 5 resolutions that I like on my desktop.
Note I have always been getting a gui, the original problem is that when I run Firefox of Chrome and reload several webpages at once the entire machine hangs, when the OS was original started in non-Failsafe mode.
Thank you, Bruce
Yes, the radeon driver is being loaded, so there does not appear a need to use 50-device-conf. Take a look again at the X logfile. There should be lines there that show this driver being selected along with the timings and resolution with which it is being configured. For how to do this and similar tweaks, I again suggest reading all the way thru the "Screen resolution thread?". Tejas links to a great archlinux page which shows examples of using the 50-xxxx files, Felix elucidates on settings, and Philipp shows how to make randr settings load with X every time. However, while all this is quite useful info and may help you fine tune your graphics, I doubt the answer is there re why on your machine FF and Chrome are locking up when reloading pages. On this I'm sorry but I don't have much to offer. Do you have the same problem if using Konqueror and Opera? If not, that suggests an issue like memory paging specific to those browsers, but again, that's just a guess. I would be inclined to check into the status of the ATI proprietary driver (fglrx). While it may have issues with recent cards, your RV350 has been around for quite a while and at least when I used that driver for that card, it worked well including doing compositing. That's the best I can offer, but there are others here with much more expertise in this area than I. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I have not tried the Opera browser and have only tried browsing with Konqueror a small amount, not enough to see teh system hang. The system did however, hang while doing an Online Update with YaST. I am beginning to think the problem is with the Ethernet driver. This is totally shocking since Ethernet and networking robustness along with overall system robustness have always been the core strength of Linux that attracted me to linux and keeps me ocming back. I suggest broader controlled tests. Replicate the browser activity in Konq & Opera to verify whether it is browser specific or more general (one hang on an online update is not conclusive of anything). If you suspect the ethernet device driver, stress test it. E.g., install the DownThemAll extension to FFox and do a somewhat large download like a live-cd from an ftp server such as one of the openSUSE mirrors; DTA will open 4 connections (you can increase the nbr if the server will permit that). Open another browser and do some surfing, pull a YouTube. There are specific stress test tools you can find, too. And try the fglrx driver. Good luck. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
