Hi All, I've recently installed the default version of SuSE 7.3 for PPC. This includes KDE, which I find quite slow -- especially on my machine. So my question: How do I go about removing KDE? (And if it's gone, can I still use applications like KDE Mail, KSirc, and Konqueror?) Any suggestions are welcome. Regards, Alexander The Netherlands

Hi i did not remove anything. for me, WindowMaker works fine, with kmail. maybe, do a <whereis> or <locate> to find where the executable is, and, then, put the whole path to the executable in menu of your preferred windows manager. best wishes ____________ sent on Linux ____________
I strongly recommend you keep KDE installed, since uninstalling it
might wipe a lot of your KDE applications. But there's no reason
why you have to run KDE - many (but not all) KDE apps will work
with other window managers. Somebody already suggested WindowMaker,
but some others you might want to look at include XFCE, Blackbox,
Fluxbox, and FVWM2.
There are several ways to install a different WM as your default.
Easiest (in my opinion) is to edit the hidden file .xinitrc in your
/home/username directory. If the file doesn't exist already, you
can create it. There is just one line in mine (I use FVWM2):
exec fvwm2
For XFCE, it's just a bit confusing as the command is "exec xfwm". For
everything else it's what you'd expect (for Blackbox it's "exec blackbox").

I have the same situation/problem ... for me KDE is working to slow and the startup takes too long ... do not remove the KDE packages ... instead install - so is my suggestion - windowmaker (with windowmaker-conf and windowmaker-apps) ... change in Yast-Sysconfig-Editor the entry Base-Administration: Login from kde to console ... reboot and start windowmaker with startx windowmaker ... you now have a good and fast working desktop and in addition all the kde-applications ... Tabanna, Robert, and Oliver thanks for your suggestions! It looks like I'll just be installing another window manager. [Have to look into it first though, because this is the first time I've heard off this possibility -- yes, I'm an absolute beginner.] Regards, Alexander
