It may work, but it's not guaranteed and AFAIK has never been tested.

Well, just try. If it doesn't work, you can still wait for the availability of SUSE Linux 9.0 for AMD64. Philipp

If it does work, it will use the processor's 32 bit emulation. You will have a $700 processor doing the same work that a $100 one does. Get SuSE 9.0 for AMD64.

AMD64 supports 32bit software, but I think it's not emulation. And it should be faster than an older processor any way. Does anyone know something that could prove me wrong? Praise

No, you are correct. The Athlon64 has 32 bit code built-in for native 32-bit compatibility. The point is still valid though that it would be a waste to buy a 64 bit processor only to run a 32-bit kernel. But it would make sense if it's only temporary until you get the 64-bit version. SuSE sells that at a much steeper price, but 'if you wanna play you've got to pay'. Uh...then again you can download it...in a few months that is. :) John S.

The fastest AMD-64 2GZ-264 in 32-bit mode will out perform a 3.0GZ zeon. And it's cheaper. I'm running a dual at work now using SUSE8-2. No problems. Looking foward to 9.0 though. Mark

1-st. Athlon-64 costs about $540, even in Russia :-) 2-nd. This is not emulation
Get SuSE 9.0 for AMD64.
It is not available yet :-(
