Hi Guys I recompiled my 2.2.18 kernel this morning, to enable SCSI support for an ide burner. This all works, however my sound chip is an AC97 I think using ALSA, which was working fine. It now doesn't and the following error message is from /var/log/boot.msg. Can someone explain what I've done, and how to fix the sound.
Starting sound driver: snd-card-via686a /lib/modules/2.2.18/misc/snd.o: unresolved symbol apm_register_callback /lib/modules/2.2.18/misc/snd.o: unresolved symbol apm_unregister_callback /lib/modules/2.2.18/misc/snd.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.18/misc/snd.o failed /lib/modules/2.2.18/misc/snd.o: insmod snd-card-via686a failed
I also have this message appearing although USB support is not enabled in the kernel.
/lib/modules/2.2.18/usb/usbcore.o: unresolved symbol hotplug_path /lib/modules/2.2.18/usb/usbcore.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.18/usb/usbcore.o failed /lib/modules/2.2.18/usb/usbcore.o: insmod usb-uhci failed
Am I being dim or are there no applications for accessing DVD's under 7.1 I mean specifically cover disc DVD's ? Thanks and regards Mark Annandale

Hi Mark, You most likely have to recompile alsa to rebuild its modules. Otoh, there should not have been any need to recompile the kernel in the first place.. A "ide-scsi=/dev/hdc" in lilo options _should_ have been sufficient ? Also, you just access "coverdisk dvd's" ( aka. data dvd ) like any other CDROM :-) ( from my fstab: /dev/dvd /dvd auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 ) And /dev/cdrom and /dev/dvd are both links to /dev/hdc :-) And the USB stuff ? You recompiled the kernel w/o support for USB, but have the usbmgr installed and active ?
