[opensuse] Sound config probs... redirecting all sound via a USB headset
I'm still trying to manage a minor, but annoying, sound config problem on a laptop I'm administering (not mine). The laptop is running openSUSE 11.2 with KDE4.4, and the user is using a Logitech wireless USB headset. The troublesome apps in question are Firefox and Ekiga. Initially I set it up using pretty much all defaults. This meant that audio from Firefox was directed through the laptop speakers, and audio from Ekiga was sent to the headset. Configuring this way was simple and it worked perfectly... it just meant telling Ekiga to use the USB headset. But... the user wanted all sound from Firefox also sent to the headset - basically no system sounds should be sent to the laptop speakers. To achieve this, I went into YaST > Hardware > Sound and configured the USB headset to be the primary sound card. This appeared to work initially... but under regular use, it's not working so well. If the user is using Firefox.. say watching a YouTube vid, and wants to make a VoIP call using Ekiga, then they get audio device errors in Ekiga. The workaround is to shut down both Firefox and Ekiga, and then start up Ekiga... sometimes this allows Ekiga to "claim" the USB headset. other times the user finds they have to log out and back in to reset or reclaim the audio. Actually, I think, having talked to them, the logout/login was a bit of overkill and simply shutting down Firefox and doing a clean startup of Ekiga should be enough. Anyway... does anyone know of any setup or config changes that I could make or look at that would allow Firefox and Ekiga to share the USB headset and stop this silliness of Ekiga failing to make calls because it cannot open the audio devices? This is the one major issue that is frustrating the user's transition from Windows (where this scenario worked), to Linux. It's annoying them enough that they've considered returning to Windows, but have asked me to help sort it out so they can keep using Linux.... so any advice here would be welcome C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
