I can't figure this out. If I try to ping localhost I get unknown host. Here is my /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 localhost 207.217.121.12 mail.earthlink.net And here are my relevant lines in /etc/nsswitch.conf: hosts: files dns networks: files dns I am not currently running nscd. Any ideas why localhost and mail.earthlink.net do not resolve??? Shouldn't that read "hosts dns" rather than "files dns"? That is about all i can think of that would cause it.. That or you have some sort of firewall running that denies ICMP replies.. Dear Friends, I have a computer connected to computer and local LAN ( via router ) How does the computer doesn't mixed up between the internet IP and local IP ? since it's now can't go inside out ( internet, local ) but not clear current configuration is A ( local IP ) Router (B - gateway) ISP (c-Internet) Now it can access internet and local but sometime messup.... how to draw a clear line, this is IP and this is LAN IP for the computer ? For the DNS should I use IP or local IP ? Quick Question, kinda off topic though.
Is there more Apple Mac users running around or Linux users on this planet?

Last I heard, Linux and Apple were pretty much tied for number of desktop/workstation users. Linux handily outpaces Apple in servers though, so there is probably more total Linux on the planet than Apple.
Quick Question, kinda off topic though.
Is there more Apple Mac users running around or Linux users on this planet?

If the firewall blocks ICMP requests/replies, it would say nothing (ergo: no replies are coming in). The message is 'Unknown host', meaning it can't find an address with that name. I'm almost 100% sure it has to be 'hosts dns' instead of 'files dns'. What does files mean anyway? (check all files on system?)
