[opensuse] booting installed system
You may remember this thread: http://lists.opensuse.org/cgi-bin/search.cgi?query=booting+installed+system+option&metaname=&list=opensuse&subject=&from=&xtime=&ytime=&timeframe=&size=10 I just discovered than this option is still there, but only in the ncurse install system (you can go to it, for example, cancelling the normal install) updated the bug #414149 that seemed the closed (even if said duplicate of an toher bug, this other one being pretty different) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://valerie.dodin.org http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-eic8MSSfM -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I tried everything with 11.0 dvd and the only way to boot installed system is via rescue and kexec. I filed an enhancement request https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=432929 to include an easy boot installed system with kexec. The advantage of kexec over the old <= 10.3 boot installed system is that you boot with your systems kernel and not the one on the dvd. I tried various methods with kexec and the sure fire one is, if you have kexec package installed on your system, from rescue system:- mount root on /mnt mount --bind proc, sys and dev on /mnt, chroot /mnt /bin/bash --login and then kexec -l /boot/vmlinuz --append=root=[your root] --initrd=/boot/initrd to load the kernel into memory then kexec -e starts your kernel. When I used the dvd's kexec without all the chrooting etc and only mounting my root my NIC wasn't picked up sometimes, in fact it didn't show up in hwinfo at all. When I have some time I am planning on playing with kexec some more and maybe add a booting installed system with kexec howto to the wiki.
