[opensuse] Hardware on SUSE OT
Hi SuSE people. Kind of an ignorant question I guesss, but who knows. Presently running 9.2 and 10.0 on one IDE disk, Win 98 on the other smaller IDE drive. Running a CDRom and a DVD burner on the other IDE2 connector. Downloaded 10.2 and want to install it but would rather not blow away the other installs. (Have to keep Win for my Flight Planning software) Anyway, my MB is a K8T Neo2 - AMD64 and is SATA capable. Here is the stupid question......Can I add a SATA drive to this setup and install 10.2 on it? (No snickering please) and if not how about a big firewire or external USB ?? Bob S. Sata capable? Does that mean it has sata headers on the board? Chances are, unless it dates back a few years when sata was buggy, it will work. But who knows which disk will end up being hda? Some times the bios lets you set that, some times not. And, I don't think, you would be happy with a distro installed on firewire or usb 2. Its pretty slow, I've tried it. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hello: Is this MB an MSI K8T Neo2-F or K8T Neo2-FIR (socket 939)? If it is then its a relatively new MB and you should not have any problem attaching a SATA hard drive. Just attach your SATA disk to the SATA1 connector on the MB. Then enter the BIOS and search for a setting like enable SATA disk and set it on. It will says that SATA1 will be Third master hard drive or something similar. After inserting the 10.2 install DVD and rebooting the computer (don't forget save the new BIOS settings) the install system should recognize the new drive as 'sda' (not hdx). I downloaded the MB manual but it is not detailed enough where to find SATA setup. .<snip stuff>........... First of all many thanks to all of you who took the time to answer this question.
Hello:
Is this MB an MSI K8T Neo2-F or K8T Neo2-FIR (socket 939)?
Not sure but the manual calls it a MS 6702E and it is the Athlon 939 pin socket.

Yes, maybe 2 years old. There are SATA1 & 2 sockets on the MB. I even got the cables when I purchased the board. I was upgrading and just reused my old ide disks.
Just attach your SATA disk to the SATA1 connector on the MB. Then enter the BIOS and search for a setting like enable SATA disk and set it on. It will says that SATA1 will be Third master hard drive or something similar.
My main concern was if it would work in conjunction with/in addition to the ide controller. Still a little concerned because the mb manual discusses using the SATA drives as serial devices using the southbridge VT8237 and or as a raid setup using the Promise 20579 chipset. A little confusing to me as I really don't know hardware all that well.
After inserting the 10.2 install DVD and rebooting the computer (don't forget save the new BIOS settings) the install system should recognize the new drive as 'sda' (not hdx).
OK, the bios shows an option to turn on the SATA controller but nothing else. Guess I should just buy a drive and try it following your advice.
I downloaded the MB manual but it is not detailed enough where to find SATA setup.
Cheers, IG
Thanks, Bob S.

Bob, I haven't tried an install on a firewire or external USB drive.....yet. ;) If the BIOS supports selecting a drive to boot from, I would think that you could install a SATA drive and put 10.2 on it.
