[SLE] C++ compiler cannot create executables
This has been happening too often for my taste. I find a program I like on freshmeat.net and when I ./configure I get an error "C++ compiler cannot create executable. " WTF Well, why the bloody hell not!? This has happened with 3 of the last 4 src's I've downloaded. It's a pretty fresh install. SuSE 6.2 PII 350 x2 64mb Kernel 2.2.14 and sometimes 2.3.39 What am I missing? Have u installed libgpp? You may also want gppshare. What is the actual program you are compiling? I had this problem when I first tried SuSE, and solved it by installing the approriate dveelopment packages. Some of these arent installed by default. You'll almost definately want xdevel installed to if its for X. This wasnt installed by default in suse 6.0. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

I just wanted whatever input you guys cared to send my way on some books I am thinking of getting. I am transitioning from a Windows NT administrator (I know, I know!) to a Unix/Linux administrator (Hey, I eventually came around), so I am not starting from scratch but I am unfamiliar with Unix and Linux except on a basic level. I would appreciate any help you could give. It's just that there is such a large selection of books that I am having trouble choosing, although I am not averse to buying more than one book on a subject. And for those interested, yes I already have searched the archives on MoonGroup. What I am interested in is your impressions of the books as experienced users who can now look back and evaluate what they needed. Also I know that one or two of the books are on a distro other than suse, I will possibly be supporting them so any comments would be helpful, or at least comments on the redhat versions in the same series(* Unleashed, Using * Special Edition, etc.). i have found, that the book: _Special Edition: using Linux _ helps out on getting some of the basics down (commands, and some shell scripting) it's also got some good references in it, but is a bit out-of date and barely covers the network security portion of it. ryan

Hi Rusty, the one sysadmin book that was not in your list but our sysadmin swears by is: "Unix System Administration Handbook" by Evi Nemeth, Garth Snyder, Scott Seebass, and Trent R. Hein, 2nd edition (they promised to come out with a 3rd edition soon, but haven't heard of it yet), Prentice Hall 1995. It covers 6 Unices, unfortunately not Linux (was supposed to happen in the next edition) and contains real life solutions to problems that a UNIX admin faces every day.
Fromyour list above I have Running Linux and Linux Companion for Sysadmins. They are both good and help me when I get stuck with my machine.

For a general book on Unix, you might want to have a look at the one I wrote, ``UNIX for the Impatient'', published by Addison-Wesley. It's reviewed on Amazon, with an average 5-star rating. It would be complementary to a SuSE-specific or even Linux-specific book. Nope, that package contains the as86 and ld86, tools that are able to handle
16 bit realmode code.
For normal development one needs the binutils package.

I've noticed that some of the kernel patches and source from the mirrors have been getting corrupted. Try to get the standard kernel from kernel.org and see if it compiles better. The 2.2.13 source has compiled well for me. The 2.2.14 patch I got was bad. -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
I think that's answered in the support database. You'll have to look for it since I didn't keep the URL. -- Rafael Herrera -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
I hate to say it, but this is the biggest pain in my butt too. I will bet that it will compile and run with RedHat. The only reason I have RH is that some things I have to have will only work easily in RH. Sounds kinda like some propaganda outa Redmond? Dunno what to say. I duual boot RedHat and SuSE on two machines here.

Ian

When configure runs, it creates a file named config.log. Look into it to see
which programm is missing or why it failed. If you post *that* info, others
may be able to help you in more detail.
