kdvdbackup or dvd::rip -- ripping movie dvd's
For some reason, my movie DVDs are ripping such that too fast. Right now, in dvd::rip it says NTSC 23.976 fps for a standard U.S. DVD. I think this should be more like 29 fps. How do I fix this? -- Cheers, wmeler

That's not true. Most of the movies are 24 (23.976) fps. The dvd player takes care to convert them to 30 fps for NTSC TV. But, some materials, TV shows, etc, may be as well shot at 30. A good guide about all this stuff - interlacing, fps, etc: http://www.100fps.com/ Sunny
Hi All, No matter what I do, I just can not get dvd:rip to work :( This is the error I get, when I try to rip a dvd. ... libdvdread : Couldn't find device name libdvdread : Can't open file VIDEO_TS.IFO ... ... [transcode] warning : (dl_loader.c) loading "/usr/lib/transcode/export_ppm.so"failed [transcode] warning : (encoder.c) loading video export module failed [transcode] warning : failed to init export modeuls [transcode] critical : plug-in initialization failed I've check the debug dependencies and the only 2 missing are dvdrecord and fping which says it's not necessary. I can play a dvd successfully and I've used the program dvdbackup to rip the whole dvd before. But I would really like to use the gui program of dvd::rip Please Help ! Thanks -- SynapseR

I had this on 9.1. Looks like a problem with the automounter. What happens, if you ls the DVD, or browse it with konqueror? I.e. do you see the files? Try starting the rip shortly after listing the files, while the device is not unmounted. Sunny

Tried that but didn't work. Here is another error I get when reading the TOC. Failed to mount DVD at /media/dvdram (mount: only root can mount /dev/dvdram on /media/dvdram -- SynapseR

Is this in 9.3? dvd::rip isn't really compatible with the new system of mounting discs. You have to trick it (or disable the new system, see the other thread for instructions on how to do that). When you insert the video DVD it will get its very own mount point in /media in the new system. Find out what that's called for the DVD you want to rip, and put that in the configuration as the disc mount point. Then the program will see your disc. Not really a solution, more of a workaround. I guess the real solution would be to make dvd::rip understand hal/udev and how to look for DVD devices and their mount points

Here is how to make your dvd always to mount to one and the same place. This should solve your problem: http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2005/05/dkukawka_hal_mountpoints.html Cheers Sunny
maybe try kdvdbackup, though i personally can't get either working yet.

I have dvd:rip working. I just ignored the error message about root being the only one who can mount. I didn't click it or do anything just run the program as if it wasn't there. Worked for me.

Any idea why it would play faster? A 115 minute movie typically plays in about 75 minutes, which is close to the ratio discussed. I don't understand this (but will read the link given). However, any input would be appreciated so I can get this working. cheers, wmeler

what is the output of: tcprobe -i /dev/dvd tcprobe -i myfile.avi transcode -v What codec you used with dvd::rip? options? copy of the transcode line from the log? Collect all this info, and I suggest to post it to dvd::rip mailing list. There you should get much more precise information and help. Cheers Sunny
Thanks, Sunny. I will get that information to that list. In the meantime, I was thinking that maybe I have been using dvd::rip incorrectly. Under the "Storage" tab, I have been doing "Rip data from DVD to harddisk before encoding". Then, under the "RIP Title" tab, I have been doing "Read DVD table of contents" and then "RIP selected title(s)/chapter(s)." I then try to play those VOB files. I have tried various transcode options, but I really don't know what I'm doing. wmeler
