nForce2 Chipset (Feedback PLEASE)
Hi, Currently I have AMD Athlon XP based PC with Chaintech m/b (VIA KT266A Chipset). In short, I would like to get rid of this junk. This system simply has too much glitches and artifacts in spite of several BIOS upgrades, component replacement, etc. The cheapest upgrade path seem to b nVidia nForce 2 chipset with dual-DDR memory path. Anyone used such m/b (e.g. Asus) with SuSE Linux 8.1? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated (incl. necessary kernel upgrades, etc). Thanks in advance. ********************************************************* * Best Regards --- Andrei Verovski (aka MacGuru) * * Home Page * http://snow.prohosting.com/guru4mac * Mac, Linux, DTP, Development, IT WEB Site *********************************************************

Hi Andrei I built a PC a couple of weeks ago witht he Asus A7N266-VM mobo, which has most things onboard. I found 8.1 installed very nicely, and much more easily than 8.0. On the latter, I could not get the nForce drivers for the network card working, and the video drivers for the onboard GForce 2 were difficult to get working. 8.1 is really very nice, although it has some little useability glitches compared to 8.0 in my view. This cheap mobo runs fine with a stock 8.1 install, and games like Unreal Tournament are very nice on it - I can give you more detailed notes on driver installation if you like, but my suggestion would be to try it by all means. Best wishes Kevin

Hi, Kevin, Many thanks for prompt reply. I will probably opt for Chaintech nForce 2 m/b which do not have built-in net card. BTW, is support for nForce2 chipset is being built into kernel or there is some kind of "generic" chipset support? Thanks ********************************************************* * Best Regards --- Andrei Verovski (aka MacGuru) * * Home Page * http://snow.prohosting.com/guru4mac * Mac, Linux, DTP, Development, IT WEB Site *********************************************************

Sound came up fine from the base install, but the network didn't - I had to download the (closed) nForce rpm and install that first. So since your board doesn't have net on it, you might not even have to do that. Best wishes Kevin
