It often happens that when the mouse isn't properly configured the x-server flips out and kills the keyboard too (sometimes it doesn't even start at all 'cos of the mouse), so your keyboard is probably configured properly. I don't know the 3-button LM mouse but I know that some of them run the config as the MS Intellimouse (mine is that). IMPS/2 protocol and PS/2 mouse should have the device configured; /dev/psaux. After using linux a couple of years I was beginning to feel like I was emerging from the newbie category but this problem with Suse has me right back there. I tried using your config and some variations as well, But all I get is a mouse that keeps returning to the lower left corner of the screen so is not usable. Then I tried another mouse. It's a MS mouse port compatible 2.1A. With the BIOS USB IRQ enabled I got by the correction in the desktop test ok. Then I opened Netscape, got to the Suse site and moved around a bit. But when I tried to enlarge the small window I lost the mouse and the kb. When I turn power off and on to reboot I usually end up with "fsck failed" mess which I don't want to tackle so have to repeat the install. This time the reboot went ok and in "dmesg" I see some lines I haven't noticed before: usb-uhci.c: Intel USB controller: setting latency timer to zero. usb-uhci.c: USB UHCI at I/O 0xd400, IRQ5 usb-uhci.c: Detected 2 ports usn.c: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 1 usb.c: USB hub found usb.c: 2 ports detected In the meantime the Red Hat machine and the mac go along fine and don't care what mouse I use. This is too bizarre! Just used my Ifeel mouse with the 2.4.1 kernel and it loaded with no additional config. Are you sure you do not have some sort of hardware problem here? Just my 2 cents, Matt On Fri, 2 Feb 2001, Jack Reilly wrote:

Did you connect the MS mouse directly to the computer or to your switch? Because of variations in mice, OSes and systems; when run through a switch the mouse is not recognized properly, so even when manually configured the proper driver is not used causing lost functionality. I use a Linksys KVM switch for keyboard and monitor only and use a direct connect mouse on each system. Using this method I have encountered no problems with mouse usage on any OS running on either system. Charles (-: Forever never goes beyond tomorrow.

The MS mouse was connected directly to the switch. Thanks for the suggestion. I tried connecting it directly to the computer and things seemed to be better. I play with kalendar for a bit but when I enlarged the window I lost the mouse and the kb. That's three times in a row now that the crash has occurred when I enlarge a window. I'll try reinstalling with the mouse connected directly. Did you make any changes to BIOS settings? Is your USB IRQ set to enable or disable? Many thanks ...jack
Yes it does look like a hardware problem alright. I'm going to try Iasuggestion I received to connect the mouse direct to the Suse computer rather than to the OmniCube. On Fri, 02 Feb 2001, you wrote:

I'll try reinstalling with the mouse connected directly. Did you make any changes to BIOS settings? Is your USB IRQ set to enable or disable?
Jack Other than setting PnP OS to disabled I made no changes to my BIOS and I have USB enabled with an assigned IRQ. When /if you reinstall try setting up your mouse as a straight generic PS/2 mouse and you might also want to test with the keyboard directly connected. Charles (-: Forever never goes beyond tomorrow.

When I reinstalled with the mouse connected directly to the computer, there was no change..I loaded Netscape and when I tried to enlarge the window got an immediate crash. PNP OS is set to disabled and USB IRQ set to enabled. But "with an assigned IRQ"? ??? I get lost there. This is my first venture into the BIOS. Slots 1,2,3, and 4/5 are all set to auto. Thanks and I'll try using the key board direct also. Jack
