I don't have very my VPN experience, however, I was able set one up. I live by the KISS system, and prefer appliances instead of software solutions... So for the VPN I set up, instead of using anything software, especially M$, like PPTP, I bought to VPN capable linksys routers, were about $100 each I think and simply created a tunnel between them. That way, the computers don't even have a clue that they aren't on the same physical LAN. It just works! B-) On Wednesday 17 November 2004 01:05 pm, Sharpe, Richard wrote:

That wouldn't work for me. One end of my vpn my notebook. It has to run the vpn software, so that I can use it elsewhere.

Which still isn't a problem with remote administration. All you would have to do at each location is plug the thing in, see what ip gets assigned to it, login to remote administration, update the newly assigned ip, and bingo! Plus if you used a wireless accesspoint router with VPN, as long as you would have to carry around this little box anyway, you would get the added benefit of both wireless and hardware firewall.... The only VPN client available for Linux I know is Cisco, as it's proprietary, it's only available for holders of a Cisco contract. i don't know if it's compatible with Symantec. The Symantec 4400 is Linux based, but http://nwc.linuxpipeline.com/news/17601488 mentions Windows etc. and ssh access. Perhaps it's doable, but you may be breaking new ground here. Symantec have GoToMyPC for which you have to register for a free trial, not sure if there is a Linux version. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Again, if you use 2 vpn enabled routers like the linksys broadband one with VPN, you can simply use Samba as if you computer is at work.... B-) On Wednesday 17 November 2004 03:46 pm, Sid Boyce wrote:

Well ... not quite the only one. I did not like the Cisco client. I used it to connect to a clients network and it was set to disable access to the local network. This may be a nice security feature, but my home directory is exported from my server. I quickly switched over to vpnc. It allowed me to make the connection without disabling the local network. Of course there are also PPTP clients for Linux. Both the server and client are part of SuSE 9.1. Search for vpn and pptp in Yast Package Manager Louis

I never had any problems with the Cisco client, you can set the parameters so access to the local network is enabled, as a matter of fact, I think it was set to disable, but I still had access to the local network, perhaps it works the reverse of what it should. Unfortunately, I've since left the company when they were taken over. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer =====LINUX ONLY USED HERE=====
