Altering the text from a mail posted by someone else, months ago, is incorrect, bad form.
So then don't quote it at all. Quoting is not required when relevance is debatable or missing.
The quoting was absolutely relevant.
Not when you can readily trim and provide a more relevant alternative, especially for a URL that was inappropriate to having been included in an opensuse.org list post in the first place.
I needed to notice there was a bugzilla and where.
Fine.
And no, editing the URL is bad form.
I tried hard to make it clear that https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=899510 would be adding new content that would make it unnecessary to quote > https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=899510 which would not consitute editing of a quote from the message replied to. Anyone ever posting a https://bugzilla.suse.com/* URL for an existing https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/* URL on an opensuse.org mailing list is using disrespectful judgement. I've updated the mailing list netiquette wiki accordingly: https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Mailing_list_netiquette#Off-topic_content-- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Omitting whole sections is not only not a no-no, it's the definition of trimming. Your address your reply to what's relevant, and omit what's not.
No matter if you hate the URL. No matter if the URL is invalid. No. A change is a change. No. That's not what the original writer of the quoted text wrote, so it is absolutely not to be changed. Period.
Omitting is not changing. Trimming is not changing. Trimming is omitting irrelevance. Trimming is being polite. You just don't get that trimmming followed by adding new material does not constitute "changing". What it is is a necessary component of any polite reply, trimming quote down to that which is relevant, plus new material. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Hi We're new to all this. Isn't what you are saying correct for all journalism? If it is a quote it must be cited literally? We are not sure if it is different on this mailing. Also, we understand that trimming is to be encouraged. Would we (may we, could we...not sure!) class trimming as extreme misquoting? How would one correctly tell someone that they did not want their input? Maybe this not possible on a mailing. Does being the originator of a post (you put the first message) bring with it any privileges? No, it is the same thing.

But I'm not the originator of the "problematic" post. That one is here, 2 Oct 2014: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2014-10/msg00096.html. Per quoted the last paragraph, intact, that includes an URL. That paragraph and the url were important, because I had not noticed them and were the answer to my original question. Felix objects to including that URL as is, because it points to "suse.com". Wants it to be removed (clipped), and another URL to opensuse.org added. Per and me say no. I tried to explain, and Per, with better sense that me, fell silent ;-) -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 13.1 x86_64 "Bottle" at Telcontar)
