[opensuse] Sound doesn't work after user switch
OpenSuse 11.3 KDE 4.5.1 HDA Intel VT1708S After I switch to another user (also KDE) both doesn't have sound. My player still doesn't pay attention to it and plays music, but I hear nothing. I have to restart alsasound to make it work again. Any suggestions? Thanks. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No, no suggestions. That is nothing new. Yes, it is a real PITA. I've had the same thing for a long time, way back to early KDE3 times. I just always open a Kmix, undo the mute. and raise the volume. Sorry about that. If someone comes up with an answer I'd love to hear about it. Nope. Kmix shows the sound on. not muted. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Over on the forums there is a fairly comprehensive sound troubleshooting guide; worth a look. You may be experiencing what is a long-time problem with linux, i.e., one program grabs the sound device blocking another from using it, even after the first program is closed. A sound server is supposed to rectify this problem. A few things to look at: Switch to the other user and go to Personal Settings/Multimedia/Phonon. Check that valid Audio Output devices are shown, and test them. There may be more than one; if one works and the other(s) do not, be sure that which works is the first in the list. Which backend are you using? Xine from Pacman seems to work best, but there is also the gstreamer and vlc backends that are worth trying. Use the gstreamer from Pacman. The vlc backend is in the 11.3-KDE-Factory-Unstable-Playground repo. If you have pulse audio enabled, disable it and try that. If pulse audio is not enabled, trying enabling it. There have been a lot of issues with pulse; it is not enabled by default in openSUSE. But sometimes it works. The pulse switch is under YaST/Sound. If your second user is hearing KDE notifications but not music, try a different player. And, some players can be configured to use pulse or alsa. So make sure that the player is configured to use pulse if you have that enabled, or vice versa. Again, that troubleshooting guide on the forums can be helpful. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Can you provide the link? I checked everything you suggested with no result. But I've just noticed that there is not sound in KDE, but it works in players. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The forum howto was submitted to the Support Database: http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Audio_troubleshooting By the way, in your first msg you indicated your device is "Intel VT1708S" - isn't that actually a VIA chip? If so, according to the HCL, it is supported under 11.3. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

This may also be worth looking into (and note the link to the original article where the steps are shown one at a time, done manually) . . . http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-help-here/multimedia/447599-mmcheck-c... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
