[opensuse] Changed provider - Yast DNS problems
Hi! I have today changed Internet provider and found that Internet configuration through Yast does not work as expected on 11.3. Previously I had PPPoE connection, now I have a direct connection to Internet. The servicemen who set up the connection obviously saw Linux for the first time so could not help. It seemed that the IP configuration went well but the DNS servers did not work. Any changes in Yast did not affect the problem. After the servicemen left I succeeded to set up the network by manually deleting file resolv.conf and renaming resolv.conf.netconfig to resolv.conf. The same problem I encountered this summer when my provider moved me from PPTP VPN to PPPoE. It seems Yast is completely useless when configuring DNS. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It seems Yast is completely useless when configuring DNS You're hooking into a modem right? Are you using a router? My PPPoE is handled by my ISP's modem, so I shut off DHCP on the modem and use a router to distribute IP's to my internal network. Maybe your modem now does the same? If this is the case, you may have to bridge the modem.
This would mean instead of setting up an internet connection via Yast, you would just have a regular network connection and just set up network services. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes. They just cut the cable by scissors just outside my flat and made a socket to connect it to another cable by the other provider. With former provider I had unlimited (no traffic charges) 5 Mbit/s Internet and 100 Mbit/s LAN plus torrent re-tracker so I could download torrents from Internet with 100Mbit/s speed. Outcoming Internet speed was not limited (up to 100 Mbit/s) With new provider I have unlimited 10 Mbit/s Internet but no LAN. But there is a "turbo button" on their site, by pressing which I can speed up to 50 Mbit/s for an hour. Also the outcoming speed is limited according the subscription. With old provider I had to use PPPoE so to connect Internet (otherwise I had only LAN access), with new provider I have direct connect to Internet with real IP. I can connect up to 5 devices to Internet which all will get separate real IPs for free, since the whole port on the router is assigned to me. The IP addresses will change only if I change the hardware as the IPs are assigned by MAC address automatically. With old provider I could connect only one computer and if I changed the hardware I should phone them so they register the new MAC address. The real IP changed from session to session. Also my subscription to the new provider is twice cheaper than the old one (about $8/month). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Then you are probably using automatic addresses, ie, dhcp, which means the DNS server is also suplied automatically - and perhaps this is what fails. In yast, traditional setup, you can choose not to accept the DNS from dhcp and put your own. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. Yes.

This also does not work. Only manual editing resolv.conf works. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The easiest way with this file is to delete it with rm /etc/resolv* By the way IIANM this will only work if you are using ifup style of config and not with NM. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
The easiest way with this file is to delete it with rm /etc/resolv*
I tried this. This does not help either. The only method works is to delete /etc/resolv.conf then do netconfig update and then rename resolv.conf.netconfig to resolv.conf
By the way IIANM this will only work if you are using ifup style of config and not with NM.
I use only ifup, NM even not installed. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No the easiest way is to set it up /etc/sysconfig/network/config and look for these two # Defines the DNS merge policy as documented in netconfig(8) manual page. # Set to "" to disable DNS configuration. # NETCONFIG_DNS_POLICY='auto' ## Type: string ## Default: "" # # List of DNS nameserver IP addresses to use for host-name lookup. # NETCONFIG_DNS_STATIC_SERVERS="" If you set these properly /etc/resolv.cong will be created correctly and you don't have to remove the file with contents you do not want HTH Togan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

So what if you do "rcnetwork restart" does the file stay the same? nslookup what are the exact results? e.g. # nslookup opensuse.org That should pretty much narrow down where the issue is created. -- Med Vennlig Hilsen, A. We already said days ago, that once you manually edit resolv.conf yast will refuse to configure it ever again. It is a feature. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. I don't know with this module. On other modules, removing the file is enough, or removing the checksum file. I think you have to remove the checksum and copy an original file, perhaps /etc/resolv.conf.netconfig. Then perhaps running SuSEconfig to apply changes.
