Good to know. Could you provide a more general example? For example, how would I do this to find out who maintains graphviz for openSUSE 11.2? I have the info I can get from rpm (-qi). Is there enough information there to find where it came from in obs? It is this link between installed rpms from obs and the obs itself that seems a bit mysterious to me. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O. OK. But I still wonder: given an installed rpm that came from the obs, how would I discover that openSUSE:11.2 is the right place? Is there anything in the rpm to indicate this? I ask because openSUSE:11.2 is not the only place on the obs with graphviz rpms (for example). If an rpm from another place in the obs was installed, could I tell from the rpm where it came from in the obs? zypper must know this. How to get it to tell?

The best indications you can find are the 'vendor' string and 'distribution' rpm -q --queryformat "%{vendor}\n%{distribution}\n" <packagename> for my currently installed gnome-menus for example that results here in: obs://build.opensuse.org/GNOME GNOME:Factory / openSUSE_Factory Tje 'distribuin' is also listed with -qi (last line). Normally this should give sufficient information where a package comes from. I'm only mentioned as bugowner as I do not have maintainer rights in the 11.2 project.
You can also find out who directly maintains a package, if you are not sure that bugowner and maintainer are the same person. However this only works for packages in Factory. The metadata for each package in openSUSE Factory contains which project is used for the actual package development: $ osc meta pkg openSUSE:Factory graphviz <package project="openSUSE:Factory" name="graphviz"> <title>Graph Visualization Tools</title> <description>A collection of tools and tcl packages for the manipulation and layout of graphs (as in nodes and edges, not as in bar charts). </description> <devel project="graphics" package="graphviz"/> </package> Then you can use the osc maintainer command on the devel project, at which point we find out that Philipp is not entered explicitly as maintainer here either: $ osc maintainer graphics graphviz bugowner: psmt maintainer: - Anyway using osc meta pkg openSUSE:Factory <packagename> can be useful to find out where the action is on a package that you want to branch and modify. This precludes my real question: given an installed rpm, how go I get the "openSUSE:Factory" in the first place? You must think of all the places in obs where that rpm could have come from. Can I tell via rpm or zypper that the specific rpm was built in openSUSE:Factory as opposed to some other place in obs? I am guessing I am curious if there is either (1) some tag added to the rpm when it is made in obs that tells where in obs it was built, or (2) some entry in the database maintained by yast/zypper that tells where they got the rpm. #1 would be the safest info because an rpm may be copied before installation. But either would help. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O. Naahh. I'm still hesitant to say it is complete info. In the case of graphviz, I get: openSUSE openSUSE 11.2 For a package I have in obs, I get obs://build.opensuse.org/home:rogeroberholtzer home:rogeroberholtzer / openSUSE_11.2_Update The info is ALMOST there. What made you decide to put a colon between openSUSE and 11.2? Is that the rule for all? If so, how would I do that for the second example? If not the rule for all, how can I determine the correct action? Why are there two items in the graphviz distribution text, but three in mine? -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O. $ osc maintainer KDE:KDE3 bugowner: KDEMaintainers
For that you need to be a developer, have that package installed (osc command) and probably need permission to query the OBS databases. There should be a common world interface, for "laymans".
maintainer: adrianSuSE, wstephenson, Beineri, dirkmueller, coolo, frispete, llunak
So you are one of them and you are thus pinged :-)
Anyhow, kbabel is already in package kdesdk3-translate built from source package kdesdk3 from the KDE:KDE3 project.
Interestingly, neither webpin nor yast (after those repos are installed) can find kbabel - or I wouldn't have asked. Anyway, I'm already (for an hour or more) installing that package (and a lot more, 600Mb over 1Mbit adsl, slow), so I will know if it is there or not. Worse, several packages are missing from the repo or the mirror, I'm afraid. The installation will fail to run (kdebase3, x64, is missing - so says yast).
The KDE 4 equivalent of kbabel is lokalize; that's in 11.2 and the KDE:KDE4:* projects as you would expect.

zypper in lokalize lokalize
I have lokalize installed on another computer, and it doesn't have features that kbabel does have and that I need. Namely, it doesn't check the .po file for correctedness as I translate. (I intentionally wrote a string with an extra %s on it, and saved the file without complain. If you know C you know what that could cause. Fortunately the filters on the forge should catch that - I hope). The other problem is that memory does not work, as I asked on another thread (and I got no reply). Thus, I'm forced to use kbabel or poedit. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
