Hello I have a dual boot Thinkpad (R40 with XP / Linux) and want to remove Ubuntu and install openSUSE without touching my M$ XP (required for work). How do I uninstall GRUB, reinstate LILO / openSUSE, and leave the M$ XP partition bootable from LILO? Linux partition maybe overwritten. Thanks for all your help in advance. Regards Geoff Waldron

Boot to the first CD/DVD and install SUSE Linux to the Ubuntu partitions. The default boot manager for SUSE linux is grub and has been for some time. SUSE Linux should figure out your partition scheme and use it. You'll be able to verify during install exactly what partitions SUSE Linux sees and wants to use. You will be able to modify that to whatever you want during the install. You may want to format the Linux partitions before install too. Formatting is an option during install so be careful which partitions you choose to format! SUSE Linux should also setup your Windows XP partition to be a grub boot option as well as at least readable, assuming an NTFS partition. Double check during the install though. FYI: openSUSE = the project. SUSE Linux is the GNU/Linux distribution you install. Therefore no one will install openSUSE unless they are duplicating the project on another web/svn/whatever server somewhere. Stan

What makes you think you need to get rid of grub? It is installed as the default boot loader with SuSE. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998

What makes you think you need to get rid of grub? It is installed as the default boot loader with SuSE. The boot loaders looked different between SUSE and Ubuntu (sorry im still learning), so I can just boot SUSE 10.0 DVD and install (reformat Ubuntu partitions)?

That is correct. Welcome to the wonderful world of flex-ability and choices also known as linux. If you have any other questions feel free to ask, the only stupid question is the one that is -not- asked. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998

I was able to replace Ubuntu 5.10 with SuSE 10. The installer formatted the old Ubuntu partitions and install SuSE 10 on them. My Windows XP(NTFS) partitions were not changed. After the install, I was able to boot to either SuSE or Windows XP. BTW, If the data on the PC is important, it is a good idea to have a recent backup of the system before running the installer. Thanks Tony

I agree. Another possibility is create a data partition so you can blow away and reinstall your OS whenever you want while your data remains untouched. Thanks for all your help, I have now managed to install 10.0 over the weekend, dual booted with XP no problems. BTW my data was backed up and on a separate partition. I will now have to get my wireless PCMCIA card working! (It worked during install but not after) I will look on the lists etc to see if I can find solution. Cheers Geoff 'Now having a lot of fun'

Actually by installing SuSE over ubuntu and opting for lilo over grubm, you ought to be able to achieve your end.
I dont think there is any problem ? Suse is not going to take an eternity to install and of course one cannot touch XP in that one hour or so. there's no need to change to Lilo, i believe. On Tue, 2006-02-28 at 15:29 +0000, Geoff Waldron wrote:
