[opensuse] wiki article: Why to use openSUSE
Any ideas what can come in there: http://en.opensuse.org/Why_to_use_openSUSE No need to reply here, just go there and add comments, new sections etc. Note that article is not "My daily rant", although something like series of articles comparing openSUSE with other distributions, operating systems, desktops might be helpful to get bigger picture. If we want to build the best distro, having digest of what other do compared to what we do can be helpful. Also comparing applications from different worlds might be good idea. -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
The default KDE setup (except the menu I prefer "KDE" style) is much
nice than any other disto. That's why I use SuSE.
What can we do to improve SuSE? Look at the user experience from
Ubuntu. I try to play an MP3 file and with 1 click it will install the
MP3 codec. Opensuse will just take me to a wiki page where I click a
link or two and then it adds packman and installs the package. Too
much of a hassle -- some people don't read and thus could get
frustrated.
Also last time I checked the PHP in SuSE does not work with IONCube
encoded files for some reason. Alot of people have reported that. IIRC
apache will just segfault. This is due to some "optimizations" applied
to PHP.
Longer release cycles would be VERY nice but I'm not crossing my finger on that.

I added: "The default KDE setup (except the menu I prefer "KDE" style) is much nicer than any other distros. That's why I use openSUSE." to http://en.opensuse.org/Why_to_use_openSUSE . Note that this is a list of reasons to use openSUSE, there are also articles that discuss user wishes for functionality or software [1], and for problems there are articles that explain how to report bugs [2]. Ah, but isn't this why there is now a new employee at Novell with the title of Community Manager (who hasn't been heard from after the initial several days of his "honeymoon period" when he was posting in this forum promising that he WILL be 'listening'!) :-) . If I could remember his name I would keep a weather-eye out for his 'popping ups' in the future. So, could you remind me of his name again, please? Don't dream, that feature will not be added. Novell (lawyers) understands it is illegal, and that's final. The roundabout 1 click install we have is the closest thing possible. Ubuntu is a community only driven project - no company to sue, but Novell is a big company with money to take.. (and well, I guess there are quite a few companies which would like to sue Novell). However they could try to get some sort of legal contract with the Frauenhofer Institut (cause most people doesn't care about the legal problems - they want to hear their music..), or at least an agreement that allows them to ship the codecs. (Who's taking this idea to novell? Someone on the list who's working in Nürnberg? :) ) Greetings Michael

Oh you could sue Canonical...

Rather: make users aware of the situation and use free codecs. And those who don't understand are damned to live with the mp crap. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

And the fact, that most mp3(even the name says it)-players doesn't support ogg-vobis doesn't make the situation easier. It's a marketing thing - while ogg is used in the industry for games it doesn't really reach the end consumer... Greetings Michael

To small target for those that might have interest and better lawyers.

The numbers are against free codecs. The 99% of market suppliers are using mp3 and will not invest money to change without good incentive, like competition using better product + offering cheaper services + too expensive to buy out and include in own offer. -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Read this to get a better idea of the complexity, from somebody "in the know": http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2005-10/msg00238.html And notice that the legal problems do not come only from the "other" side. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. You know, there is a very good reason why lawyers exist - and that is because there are 2 sides to every story. And it is also the reason why lawyers will always exist and will always make money- because, no matter what, they never lose. What was the point then of Novell and MS "doing a deal"? ho else has gone to bed with MS? Is openSUSE the only distro around now? I am using openSUSE 10.3 and I can view DVDs and digital TV. So why is there is this hypocricy about paying attention to what lawyers think?

Precisely as there are two sides and both could win, the safe course is not to risk it. Let be somebody else who risks it. - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
