Hi all, I run SuSe 6.4 on my Firewall . eth0 is connected to my Intranet and the ppp0 interface is a Zyxel ISDN TA . I use Firewals for packet filtering and masquerading and wvdial.dod for on demand connectivity. Beginning in Dec or so , Cable Modem connectivity would be available in my area . I have been reading up on this type of access..but i am a little confused ... i) Would I need to install another ethernet card ? ii) Would I need to configure a DHCP Client ? iii) Would it be possible to continue using ISDN ( as standby ) ? iv) IP Masquerading and ipchains issues . I am sure many on this List have been through this :-) Best regards Anurag -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

Most likely, though I have heard of other interfaces that some cable modems use. ii) Would I need to configure a DHCP Client ? Depends on the service. Some offer static IPs (like mine) some assign them dynamically. iii) Would it be possible to continue using ISDN ( as standby ) ? Not sure on this one. iv) IP Masquerading and ipchains issues . I ended up using LRP for my routing and firewall needs. You will need to install a second nic if you are planning on doing some masquerading, or if your computer will act as the gateway to the internet. What I do is setup eth0 as the external interface, and eth1 as my internal interface. My computer is the firewall/router for my private network. i) Would I need to install another ethernet card ?
Depends on the ISP, for some, yes, but for others, you might get some other kind of card with which to connect to the cable "modem".
ii) Would I need to configure a DHCP Client ?
Depends on the ISP, some give dynamic using PPPoE, some use DHCP, and some give static IPs.
iii) Would it be possible to continue using ISDN ( as standby ) ?
Probably. This depends on a combination of your Phone provider and the type of cable "modem". It might require to accounts. Your ISP should be able to answer this.
iv) IP Masquerading and ipchains issues .
I don't know much about this, other than the fact that you will be more vulnerable to attack, if you are going to be online 24/7, so it would be advisable to look closely at your security.
