[SLE] samba config (10.0)
I used to be quite good with samba, but the fast evolution of the two last years may have been too fast for me; I have samba perferctly running on my 10.1 workstation, but I can't achieve to make it work on my server. I have no file to share, but a printer. The printer works perfectly as cups for a linux client, but I can't make it work for a XP client. in fact my server is impossible to see on the smb share, nor from kde nor from XP. I have exactly the same smb.conf file for this server (not working 10.0) and for the desktop (perfectly working-10.1) in both cases I have a samba user (same one, same id and passwd) any idea? what Can I give to help? (config, logs?) thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Running samba JUST to get printer support in XP is sort of like killing flys with a hammer. XP knows how to deal with cups servers. In Xp while defining the printer, set Network printer radio button on Connect to printer on internet or on home/office network (don't select search) In the URL field, enter http://susemachinename:631/printers/PrinterName (for susemachinename you can substitute the IP) (for PrinterName you put in the name you defined in Cups) -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Glad to help out. You can print on a printer anywhere in the world this way as long as you have access to it, just like with Linux. Cups seldom has the abilityto load drivers for the XP machine but you can pick them from the list in XP. In many cases it is better to have two queues on the Cups server, both of which point to the same physical printer. One for Linux, and One for Windows. So you might have LinuxLaser and WindowsLaser. The difference would be that the WindowsLaser queue would use the RAW option (because windows already processed the print into the proper format) and this saves wasted processing on the Cups Server. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com
