Was: 8.1 - Yast2 search facility has disappeared but since John told me where it is, I guess it's time to change the thread
In the spirit of this list why don't you share the actual steps that you used to resolved the problems that you have mastered.
Fair point, Peter. Here goes. Remember this is from a newbie, I'm sure you old timers would have cracked it all in no time... 1. USB mouse not working This was an intermittent problem when I first installed 8.0. It was fixed by
http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/usb80.html It became a solid problem in 8.1 and was fixed by adding the insmod commands for hid and mousedev as specified in http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/wessels_usbmouse80.html
2. CDs My setup has a Hitachi DVD-ROM GD-5000 reader on hdc, a Memorex 32MAXX 1240AJ read/writer on hdd. When I installed 8.0. the reader was set up in lilo as ide-hd (or something similar), the writer as ide-scsi. In 8.1, the reader was changed to ids-scsi too (and to answer Kevin's question, no, I don't recall having any choice). I added the following symlinks as mentioned in this list
ln -sf /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrom ln -sf /dev/sr0 /dev/dvd ln -sf /dev/sr1 /dev/cdrecorder
I get error messages at startup like those mentioned by Keith, but all appears to work okay. I mentioned having problems with audio CDs. They just seem to have gone away.... Only problem is in Konq Audio CD browser, which gives the message
An error occured while loading audiocd:/: The file or directory / does not exist.
Haven't cracked that yet. 3. TV card This is a Hauppage WinTV card which was correctly set up when I installed 8.0. In 8.1, trying to run any TV app I got the message
can't open /dev/video0: No such device
Eventually I tracked it down to a missing entry in modules.conf. I added the following, taken from my 8.0 backup of the file, and it now works.
# YaST2 configured TV card # vuMS.MxeyIaK_bEB:Hauppauge WinTV alias char-major-81-0 bttv
4. Printer Under 8.0 I used to have intermittent printing problems. It would say it had printed a doc, but nothing appeared. I had to switch the printer off and on again. This problem *seemed* to go away when I converted to the CUPS driver, but it's back now. No solution as yet. 5. Outstanding problems - Long delay in signing on to my ISP. I guess this is the same problem mentioned by others; I can afford to wait for someone to come up with a good fix :-) - Odd warning messages during boot, which don't appear to stop things working, namely
Searching for unresolved configuration files^G done
Please check the following files (see /var/adm/rpmconfigcheck):
/etc/X11/qtrc.rpmnew and more. I'm sure the rpm docs will tell me what exactly I have to check, when I can get round to it...
I was also getting some messages about modules.conf being newer than some other file, but these seem to have disappeared. But just out of interest, can anyone point me at some documentation about what this file is/does? That's all folks TonyB
