I've recently installed SuSE 9.2 on an hp nx 7010 notebook. I've had 9.1 on the same machine and everything worked fine. I can't shutdown the system. Funny enough when i decide to shut down in every moods possible the computer simply restarts. How can I fix it? It's really annoying

Have you tried "init 6" as root? Seems as if maybe you're in the reboot mode as a user. Terence

Well init 6 is for reboot, if you want to shut down you would use init 0 -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989 SuSE since 1998 * Only reply to the list please*

You have my sympathy. Upgrading from 9.1 to 9.2 has been a disaster for me, on both my laptops. One of them (Gericom Ego) won't switch off whether ACPI is enabled or not - and I've now discovered that if you close the lid, when you open it again the backlight doesn't come back on. Now I might have led a sheltered life, but trying to read what is on an LCD with no backlight is a new experience for me. (If ACPI is enabled, a kernel OOPS prevents KDE from starting up.) On the other laptop (Dell Latitude CPXj) the serial port no longer works - KPilot can no longer find a Palm Vx, at any rate. What are you playing at, SuSE? ___________________________________________________________ ALL-NEW Yahoo! Messenger - all new features - even more fun! http://uk.messenger.yahoo.com

That seems to be an ACPI issue. Try the latest "kernel of the day" from
SUSE - I noticed that it now includes a fix that may resolve that issue
for you:
* Fri Nov 19 2004 - trenn@suse.de
- - patches.fixes/do_not_restart_on_shutdown
fixes restart on acpi systems when trying to power off (#47048)
A patch is also available from here:
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3669
Bye,
LenZ

Unfortunately, in my case, it won't shut down even with ACPI disabled. And when you close and open the lid, the backlight stays off. I would be keen to know if someone is looking at what they did to make the kernel OOPS when ACPI is on, but it's good to see that one thing has been mended.
