Yes, I see the same and I am running the cyrus imapd, so it does not sound like a courier problem. I have kmail 1.9.6 on kde 3.5.6
I initially thought that setting the mail check interval smaller would help, but it seems not to matter, and I have to occasionally click into a folder to get an accurate count.
Please bug report this _upstream_ at bugs.kde.org.
Will do. But I wanted to check the distro first.

Seems to be the same status on most/all distros (Kmail i OpenBSD and Mandriva 2007)... Seems to be a KDE/Kmail problem. For me (OpenSUSE 10.2 on the desktop now...) it is however very rare to see this (but it has happended). But I have the Cyrus notify daemon that will tell Kmail that new mails have arrived. Don't know if Courier has one. If so... Try to enable it. Maybe this is the factor that makes this issue very rare for me.
