I'm not sure if this is intentional, but it looks a bit odd to me.
Leap42.1 with Plasma 5. Generally, I find the icons on the start menu to be quite small, but to make up for that, the icons under "Add widgets" are enormous :-)
I really have NO idea why somebody would have spent enormous amount of time in coming up with Plasma 5 with all of its lill quirks for which there doesn't appear any rhyme or reason for having them. If you right click on the Start icon (bottom left of task bar) you will get a menu where one of the items is ALTERNATIVES. Click on this and you will get another menu with 3 options. If you select the middle option (Application Launcher) it appears you are then provided with the Start menu of old (in KDE4) and you can also select here the icon to be used for the Start button (ie, you are allowed to choose the well known, and liked, Gecko). On the other hand, if you leave the menu looking as it is -- ie, showing the KDE icon, you are in the last option of the 3 for this Start button (NOTE: I *think* :-) because I am working from memory!) but here you are able to control the size of the icons appearing in the Launcher/Start button menu. Then -- and this is where you may have to fiddle with things to overcome the "its size that matters" dilemma you state above :-) by going to System Settings>Icons>Advanced and altering the size of icons to meet your preferences. There is also System Settings>Application Style>Widget Style>Fine Tuning where size can be manipulated. Oh, BTW, if you go to System Settings and select in the appropriate places to use the OXYGEN theme you will end up with icons/ikons/widgets/bridgets/whatever which are identical to what we have in KDE4 - and not the stick-type horrors in Plasma5 default.
