You mentioned an engineering department right? What---are they running 486's with 8 MB RAM?
Any decent dept these days at least has a PIII 1 GHz with 128 MB RAM.
We're running PIII 800MHz with 256MB RAM. The problem is that our eng. Linux workstations act as intranet servers and they also run tons of varies data analysis tools, and MySQL databases. These workstations are severely overloaded with all this stuff. So, we're looking into possibilities to take off some load by moving into less system resources hungry desktop environment.
