if it's the normal grub then why pressing 'e' on a boot entry doesn't permit me to edit the settings? Every key I press except the arrows and <enter> ends up in the "boot options" line at the bottom (as in the image attached)
Try pressing escape and answering 'OK' to switch to text mode. Then you can edit the options.
