I have not yet been able to Mirror my Boot+Root partitions despite formatting with the correct format and creating a mirror RAID - Is there anything special in creating a RAID (mirror) of the boot+root partitions of a HDD. In the past I have kept the volume space identical on 2 different Physical drive to create a meaningful redundant boot+root partition that will be preserved if 1 physical drive fails that contains the boot+root partition. Yes I always configure ample swap space in all the above where multiples physical drives exist despite running 8 GIG of RAM.
Is there something I have possible not done to correctly boot from a (RAID) Redundant boot+root drive on different physical media.
I have not tried to RAID Redundant any /home/ or below mount point so I may have missed something.
P.S Hate the new Partitioner in 11.1 - I saw nothing wrong with its form in 11.0, but like everything it needs to be like a dependency tree picture to keep everyone happy ;-)

Scott I haven't tried in 11.1, but I have /boot /home and / set up in raid1 using both mdraid and dmraid in 10.3 and 11.0. The best thing I can do right now is just give you a couple examples of my setups so you can compare wit what you have: openSuSE 11.0 mdraid 1 for / and /home (no separate /boot on this install) i586 04:23 zion~> cat /proc/partitions major minor #blocks name 8 0 60051600 sda 8 1 40957686 sda1 8 2 449820 sda2 8 3 1 sda3 8 5 18643401 sda5 8 16 40209120 sdb 8 17 15366141 sdb1 8 18 24836490 sdb2 8 32 488386584 sdc 8 33 1 sdc1 8 37 20972794 sdc5 8 38 467411143 sdc6 8 48 488386584 sdd 8 49 1 sdd1 8 53 20972794 sdd5 8 54 467411143 sdd6 9 0 20972720 md0 9 1 467411004 md1 04:24 zion~> cat /etc/fstab /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_IC35L060AVV207-_VNVB40G8TJ3L0H-part2 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/md0 / ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 1 /dev/md1 /home ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2 /dev/sdb2 /mnt/10.3 ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2 /dev/sda5 /mnt/10.3-root ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 sysfs /sys sysfs noauto 0 0 debugfs /sys/kernel/debug debugfs noauto 0 0 usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto 0 0 devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0 04:24 zion~> cat /etc/mdadm.conf DEVICE partitions ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid1 UUID=73755ba5:95d1ea93:627fcc2b:ab9778b1 ARRAY /dev/md1 level=raid1 UUID=b119e184:e3bd8652:792c1ed2:3107e924 openSuSE 11.0 dmraid1 /boot /home / x86_64 02:24 ecstasy:~> cat /proc/partitions major minor #blocks name 8 0 488386584 sda 8 1 1 sda1 8 5 72229 sda5 8 6 2104483 sda6 8 7 20972826 sda7 8 8 465234336 sda8 8 16 488386584 sdb 8 17 1 sdb1 8 21 72229 sdb5 8 22 2104483 sdb6 8 23 20972826 sdb7 8 24 465234336 sdb8 8 32 488386584 sdc 8 33 20972826 sdc1 8 34 467411175 sdc2 253 0 488386583 dm-0 253 1 488384001 dm-1 253 2 72229 dm-2 253 3 2104483 dm-3 253 4 20972826 dm-4 253 5 465234336 dm-5 02:27 ecstasy:~> cat /etc/fstab /dev/mapper/nvidia_fdaacfde_part6 swap swap defaults 0 0 /dev/mapper/nvidia_fdaacfde_part7 / ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 1 /dev/mapper/nvidia_fdaacfde_part5 /boot ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2 /dev/mapper/nvidia_fdaacfde_part8 /home ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 sysfs /sys sysfs noauto 0 0 debugfs /sys/kernel/debug debugfs noauto 0 0 usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto 0 0 devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0 none /proc/bus/usb usbfs auto,busgid=1009,busmode=0775,devgid=1009,devmode=0664 0 0 (no /etc/mdadm.conf with dmraid) openSuSE 10.3 dmraid 1 /boot /home / x86_64 04:22 nirvana:/srv/www/download/screenshots/ms> cat /proc/partitions major minor #blocks name 8 0 488386584 sda 8 1 1 sda1 8 5 72229 sda5 8 6 2104483 sda6 8 7 33567786 sda7 8 8 452237751 sda8 8 16 488386584 sdb 8 17 1 sdb1 8 21 72229 sdb5 8 22 2104483 sdb6 8 23 33567786 sdb7 8 24 452237751 sdb8 253 0 488386583 dm-0 253 1 488384001 dm-1 253 2 72229 dm-2 253 3 2104483 dm-3 253 4 33567786 dm-4 253 5 452237751 dm-5 00:43 nirvana:/srv/www/download/screenshots/ms> cat /etc/fstab /dev/mapper/nvidia_hacfgfda_part7 / ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 1 /dev/mapper/nvidia_hacfgfda_part5 /boot ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2 /dev/mapper/nvidia_hacfgfda_part8 /home ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2 /dev/mapper/nvidia_hacfgfda_part6 swap swap defaults 0 0 proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 sysfs /sys sysfs noauto 0 0 debugfs /sys/kernel/debug debugfs noauto 0 0 usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto 0 0 devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0 /dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto,user,sync 0 0 Compare with what you have and we will follow up tomorrow. -- David C.
