Can anyone tell me how to get a microphone to work in SuSE 8.0 or 8.1? I have two machines each with integrated sound and I cannot get a mic to work on either system. I'll admit I am totally ignorant when it comes to mm. I have attached a .png screenshot of the hardware info from YAST2. Any help will be appreciated.
Your screenshot didn't make it, but make sure in the mixer, you turn up the mic and input controls. Alot of mics, are not very good, and the regular mic inputs are not amplified, so you need a good microphone. At least one of those $10 dollar ones from the computer supply store. The best solution, is to feed your mic into a pre-amp, and then feed that into the "Line-in". To quickly test a mic, plug it in and start your sound system, like "rcalsasound start". Then dd if=/dev/dsp of=mytest.raw hit cntrl-c to stop then cat mytest.raw >/dev/dsp If you here alot of static with your voice, it's OK, just switch to a real recording program. If you get nothing, then the sound card is not setup right. -- use Perl; #powerful programmable prestidigitation
