SuSE 9.0 is good for at least 6-12 months. How often do people upgrade anyway? As for what happens next, well we have no idea at all. I expect there will be changes, but hey, they could be changes for the better. SuSE Professional isn't perfect, after all. It wasn't that long ago that people were complaining about "kitchen sink" distros. And if things do go pear-shaped, well, worry about that one nearer the time.
That's kind of the point. I'm not going to spend $80 on something that's only good for a year when people on this list and other SuSE lists still get security patches for 7.3. I'll spend that $80 on a good FreeBSD book and a 4CD set of the OS and the Ports and I'll never look back, because what I'm talking about is stability. The knowledge that what I'm running today I can run as long as I choose and that no one is going to pull the carpet out from under me.
If you can't risk $80 for a year of SuSE, then I would go find something you are comfortable with. People spend more than that on <enter your fav vice here>.... There are no guarantees in life. Have some sense in this.
I think any reasonable person that uses their computer for work would want that kind of assurance.
