The real argument is ease of use: software raid cannot include /boot, so you have to provide redundancy for /boot in some other way.
Well, as long as /boot is ext3 and one installs grub on both disks, it works. (I tested it by ripping out disks.) That said, your statement
I also insist on hotplug drives, so I can change a broken hdd without taking the system down. Even more important, I don't have to think about the necessary steps or commands, just rip out the broken drive and plug in the new one, the controller takes care of the rest.
is of course the real argument for hardware raid.
That is something I can do even if I suffer from sleep deprivation. (^-^)
Just make sure that you really rip out the broken disk. Just last month, I was called to a customer's site because some sleep-deprived sysadmin ripped out the working disk, and not the broken disk. Usually, I recommend my technicians to just let the RAID degrade and repair it with calm, when they are well rested -- after all, they just lost the failover possibility... ;-) Joachim -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Joachim Schrod Email: jschrod@acm.org Roedermark, Germany -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
