Hi, You should either create the BSD slice manually from fdisk (linux) so that it would be more easyer to identify it when you will install FreeBSD or pay VERY much attention when you create it from FreBSD's installer. About the boot manager, set the FreeBSD (when prompted) to install its own boot loader in the pratition's boot, not MBR. Then configure lilo to boot that partition using 'other' directive: other=/dev/hda3 label=FreeBSD Regards, Alin. H du Plooy wrote:
I need to get myself aquinted with BSD for an upcoming "gig." I'm hoping some of you have experince running both on one computer. Some time ago, I tried installing OpenBSD. I had a couple of gig open space at the end of my hard disk. I carefully checked it out in fdisk, where it starts and ends, and during the OpenBSD install created the BSD slice in exactly that spot. Installation went well, but upon reboot there was nothing. Not even a bootloader.
So booting from my linux CD I was horrified to discover that all my partitions had disappeared. Using Partition Magic's "recover" function, I managed to restore my windows and linux partitions (the two most important ones as far as the data thereon is concerned).
But now I'm scared. I got hold of FreeBSD 4.7, and tried it out inside VMWare. I made a 300mb windows partition, and then installed BSD on what was left (1.7g iirc) and it worked fine.
Now back to my real hard disk. Partition setup is as follows:
hda1 -> FAT32 - win2k hda2 -> reiserfs - SuSE 8.1 hda3 -> reiserfs - empty hda4 -> extended hda5 -> reiserfs - /home hda6 -> FAT32 hda7 -> BeOS hda8 -> swap
I read the linux+BSD mini-howto, and from that I feel reasonably comfortable with the way it's supposed to work, but I'm still terrified of loosing anything on my disc. And that howto is very old - 2.0 linux kernel and FreeBSD 3.0... BSD is supposed to go on hda3, which is about 2gb. I got the setup so far to change it's type to BSD (164 I think), but it won't do anything further with it. SHould I delete this partition and let the FreeBSD setup create a slice there?
What's the safest way to do this?
Thanks Hans
